The English Football League has removed Southampton from Saturday’s Championship play-off final for spying offences. An Independent Disciplinary Commission ruled that the club broke regulations by secretly filming opponents’ training. Southampton also received a four-point deduction for the 2026-27 season, while Middlesbrough stand to be reinstated against Hull City if sanctions remain.
Southampton confirmed an intention to challenge the verdict and will use all legal options. The club retains the right to appeal, and the EFL aims to complete that process on Wednesday. Officials may move the Championship play-off final date at Wembley Stadium if the case is not settled in time.
The case covers a series of incidents during the 2025-26 Championship season, not just the semi-final. Southampton were first charged on Friday 8 May, relating to conduct before the play-off semi-final first leg against Middlesbrough. Further charges followed on Sunday 17 May, after investigators uncovered more alleged breaches involving league fixtures earlier in the campaign.
According to the EFL statement, the additional allegations were linked to information found after the Middlesbrough proceedings began. These fresh details widened the scope of the investigation beyond the semi-final tie. As a result, the Independent Disciplinary Commission examined activity across several months, rather than one isolated event.
Southampton admitted breaking rules that demand clubs act with “the utmost good faith” towards each other. The club also accepted breaches of regulations that ban viewing another team’s training session within 72 hours of a scheduled match. These rules are designed to protect competitive integrity across the Championship calendar.
The acknowledged spying episodes involved Oxford United, Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough. Southampton staff watched Oxford United’s training before a league fixture in December 2025. Similar surveillance occurred ahead of a Championship game with Ipswich Town in April 2026. The club then monitored Middlesbrough preparations prior to the May 2026 play-off semi-final first leg.
| Fixture | Opponent | Month and Year | Type of breach |
|---|---|---|---|
| League match | Oxford United | December 2025 | Observation of training within 72 hours |
| League match | Ipswich Town | April 2026 | Observation of training within 72 hours |
| Play-off semi-final first leg | Middlesbrough | May 2026 | Unauthorised filming and observation of training |
If the disciplinary ruling is upheld, Middlesbrough will return to the Championship play-off final after losing to Southampton 2-1 on aggregate. That semi-final defeat would be overturned, placing Middlesbrough against Hull City. The winner of the Wembley match will secure promotion and a place in the Premier League.
For Middlesbrough, this would be a first Championship play-off final appearance since 2015. On that occasion, the team were beaten 2-0 by Norwich City in the showpiece event. The current squad therefore have a chance to change the club’s recent play-off history, subject to the appeal outcome.
Hull City provide demanding opposition in this scenario. Before a 1-0 home defeat in December, Middlesbrough were unbeaten in four league games against Hull, with three wins and one draw. Hull have also achieved a statistical landmark by becoming the first sixth-placed side to reach the Championship play-off final since Derby County in the 2018-19 season.
Championship play-off final announcement and official EFL communication
The EFL underlined the Commission’s findings in a public statement and social media update. The organisation stressed that the case involves “unauthorised filming of other Clubs training” as well as live observation. The message confirmed that competition rules had been broken on multiple occasions across the 2025-26 season.

The final decision on Southampton’s appeal will shape the Championship play-off final line-up and schedule. If the expulsion stands, Middlesbrough will prepare for Hull City at Wembley with promotion at stake. If the appeal succeeds, Southampton’s reinstatement would restore the original final, leaving the EFL to adjust competition plans once again.
