June 14 (UPI) — President Donald Trump and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Shafir announced Sunday that the United States and Iran have come to a peace agreement.
Shafir said on social media that the United States and Iran have called for an immediate and permanent end to their military operations. This includes military operations in Lebanon.
Pakistan has served as a mediator in peace talks between the United States and Iran.
“Following intensive talks, we are pleased to announce that the Peace Deal between the United States of America and Islamic Republic of Iran has been REACHED,” Shafir wrote.
Tasnim News Agency, Iran’s state media outlet, has also broadcast the announcement of the peace agreement.
Details of the peace agreement have not been made public.
“Congratulations to all! I hereby fully authorize the toll free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade,” Trump wrote on social media. “Ships of the World, start your engine. Let the oil flow!”
Kazem Gharibabadi, deputy foreign minister of Iran, said the U.S. naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz will end on Sunday night.
Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz, a key route in the Middle East oil trade, after the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran on Feb. 28. Gas and oil prices have dramatically increased since then.
AAA reports the average price of a gallon of regular gas in the United States is $4.07 on Sunday. A year ago it was $3.13.
“With the agreement now in place, mediators will facilitate a series of meetings this week,” Shafir said. “These pre-implementation discussions will lay the foundation for the technical talks and the official signing ceremony.”
