After eluding capture for more than a month in Yellowstone National Park, a Jack Russell terrier named Luna has finally been found safe, easing mounting fears for her survival in the wilderness.

The dog slipped away from her family’s cabin during a vacation, but her ordeal ended happily on Wednesday when she was caught and reunited with her owners.

The 10-year-old white dog, with pointy ears and a gray collar, was spotted crossing road intersections, strolling through employee housing, and walking into lodges through automatic doors across the park, which hosts grizzly bears, wolves, and other wild predators.

Katie Boucher, the volunteer leading the rescue effort and spokesperson for Luna’s California owners, said she and one owner found the dog inside a trap baited with fabric scraps from a T-shirt and pillowcase belonging to the family. They took her to a veterinarian, where the owner held her during an examination Wednesday afternoon.

“She’s underweight, but that’s to be expected. She’s alert and in good spirits,” Boucher said. “I was crying all the way up here from the park.”

Luna escaped on Sept. 10. Boucher said the dog spent her first year living on the streets before adoption, which gave her sharp survival instincts. Sightings indicated Luna was retracing her family’s steps from the day before she vanished—sneaking into eateries or lodges they had visited and seeking shelter around employee residences and businesses.

The day she escaped, her family had left her inside their cabin displaying a “Do Not Disturb” sign while they went out exploring.

They believe a housekeeping staffer accidentally opened the door, letting the dog out. Staff then spent over two hours chasing her around the area before the owners returned, discovered the chaos, and realized their dog was missing, Boucher recounted.

Yellowstone was established as the first U.S. national park and covers roughly 3,500 square miles (around 9,000 square kilometers), including portions of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho.

Luna’s family searched for the dog, a Chihuahua mix, but were advised she had likely died, possibly killed by a coyote. Days after leaving Yellowstone, the owners heard of fresh sightings and contacted Boucher, president of the Norris Ark Training and Recovery Center in Norris, Montana, north of the park.

“I cannot fathom how I would feel if I had been taking the vacation of a lifetime, and looking for all these memorable experiences in one of the most beautiful places on earth, and lost one of my family members there,” Boucher said.

Locals and tourists called out to Luna or chased her, triggering a fight-or-flight response that drove her deeper into the park, Boucher explained. Volunteers set a live trap using scent items from her family to draw her in, avoiding food that might attract bears or other animals.

Time was running out with winter closing in. Boucher explained this was the last week she could search for Luna, as she was staying at a seasonal employee RV park that closes next Monday.

The search effort rallied local residents and tourists alike. Marie Jaskula, an area resident who operates one of the park’s general stores, put up flyers at every entrance to the park encouraging visitors to keep an eye out for the dog.

“It’s really hard to stress the importance of do not chase,” said Jaskula. “Everybody sees this little dog buzz across the intersection or maybe around their employee housing, and the first instinct is to call her name and chase her.”
