Germany booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stages after staging a late comeback to defeat Ivory Coast 2-1 in an entertaining Group E clash. Super-sub Deniz Undav emerged as the hero, scoring both goals, including a dramatic injury-time winner.
The Elephants made a confident start and were rewarded in the 30th minute. Rising star Yan Diomande produced an impressive run down the flank before delivering a dangerous ball into the box, which captain Franck Kessié converted from close range to hand Ivory Coast the lead. Germany struggled to break down a disciplined Ivorian defence, with the likes of Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz, and Kai Havertz finding little space in the final third.
Seeking a response, Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann made several changes midway through the second half. The substitutions proved decisive as Deniz Undav, introduced from the bench, equalised in the 68th minute. Nadiem Amiri’s teasing delivery found the striker unmarked at the far post, and Undav made no mistake with his finish.
Ivory Coast goalkeeper Yahia Fofana produced a number of crucial saves to keep his side in the contest, but Germany eventually found a breakthrough. In the fourth minute of added time, Felix Nmecha split the defence with a perfectly weighted pass, allowing Undav to turn and fire home the winner.
The victory gives Germany six points from two matches and confirms their progression to the Round of 32. Ivory Coast remain on three points and will look to secure qualification when they face Curacao in their final group game. Germany, meanwhile, will meet Ecuador in their last Group E fixture.
The result also marked a significant milestone for Germany, who have reached the World Cup knockout rounds for the first time since lifting the trophy in Brazil in 2014.
Now, under Nagelsmann, Germany have finally broken that streak, securing a place in the knockout phase and reigniting hopes of another deep World Cup run. Fans reacted on social media after the dramatic win.
So Germany for the first time in a long time actually have a team with the talent (and playing together) to win it all. Watch out! Finally get out the group stage

The comeback win for Germany has ignited hope among the fans as qualification to the knockouts is also a big step forward.
Germany got the result, but Côte d’Ivoire earned the respect. Some teams lose and disappear, others lose and announce themselves. 🇨🇮👏 #WorldCup

This match had everything a World Cup game should have.
Ivory Coast shocked Germany by taking the lead in the first half, but Germany showed exactly why theyre considered one of the favourites. Ivory Coast missing a lot of chances cost them to lose this game.

"Germany are showing why people always count them among football's elite. Even when games get difficult, they usually stay organized, disciplined and keep pushing," a fan wrote.
