The prospect of watching Brazil’s star-studded national team play in Kolkata should have been an unqualified celebration for Indian football.

Instead, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) is facing growing criticism over the decision to prioritise the blockbuster friendly over a FIFA-recognised tournament – and the money reportedly involved has become the centre of the controversy.

India will face five-time World Cup champions Brazil at the Salt Lake Stadium on October 3. The fixture is part of Brazil’s first Asia tour in more than two decades and will see the Selecao arrive in India after two matches against Australia on September 25 and 29. Brazil are currently ranked fifth in the world, making them the highest-ranked opposition India have faced since the FIFA rankings ere introduced in 1992.

But what has turned the historic fixture into a contentious issue?

1. The Reported ₹50-70 Crore Cost

The first and biggest concern is financial.

Reports have estimated that bringing Brazil to India could involve expenditure of around ₹60-70 crore, with the broader reported range standing at ₹50-70 crore. The costs are understood to include the appearance fee, logistics and match operations. The agreement also reportedly requires Brazil to field its senior A team.

The key criticism is not simply that Brazil are expensive. It is whether this is the right moment for Indian football to spend that kind of money on one friendly.

Former India captain Bhaichung Bhutia has been the strongest voice against the decision. Speaking to PTI, he said:

“If Brazil were coming free of cost to play a free friendly match, I have no problem with that. But to pay Brazil Rs 50-70 crore to come and play a friendly in India at this moment, the timing is not right. The timing is completely wrong.”

2. India Chose Brazil Over a FIFA-Recognised Tournament

The controversy is not only about the friendly. It is also about what India gave up to play it.

India had accepted an invitation to participate in the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup and were drawn alongside Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. The tournament falls within the September 21-October 6 international window, creating a direct clash with the October 3 Brazil fixture. India have now withdrawn from the competition to prioritise the Brazil match.

Unlike a one-off friendly, the ASEAN Cup would have provided India with multiple competitive matches against teams from a region that has regularly challenged Indian football. Bhutia pointed specifically to the opportunity to face sides such as Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore.

3. One Glamour Game vs Long-Term Development

There is no doubt that Brazil can generate extraordinary attention. Kolkata has a historic connection with Brazilian football, and the match is expected to attract huge interest. The AIFF has described the fixture as a landmark occasion, while Brazil’s football federation has highlighted India’s enormous Brazilian fan base.

The AIFF’s case is straightforward: playing Brazil gives Indian footballers an opportunity to test themselves against one of the world’s elite teams while exposing Indian football to a global audience.

But critics question whether one night of global attention can compensate for the developmental value of several competitive matches.

A match against Brazil could provide invaluable experience, but India are currently ranked 138th, while Brazil are fifth. The enormous gap raises another question: will a heavily one-sided contest actually contribute more to India’s development than competitive matches against teams closer to their own level?

4. The Domestic Football Crisis Makes the Timing More Difficult

Bhutia’s criticism has also been fuelled by the problems confronting Indian club football. He questioned the decision to commit such a large amount of money at a time when clubs are struggling financially.

“Why do you want to pay Rs 50-70 crore at this moment when ISL clubs are shutting down, club after club, and I-League clubs are struggling to pay their entry fees?”

The timing has therefore made the optics particularly difficult for the AIFF. While the federation is trying to stage one of the biggest international football events ever held in India, parts of the domestic football ecosystem are dealing with financial and administrative uncertainty.

MyKhel talked with a former India footballer who chose anonymity and blasted AIFF, stating,”This is all a big eyewash. When the ISL is struggling, league teams are folding, why do you choose to spend this money for a match?”

5. Could the Brazil Game Still Be Worth It?

There is another side to the argument. Brazil’s visit could generate significant revenue through sponsorships, broadcasting, ticket sales and commercial partnerships. Organisers are reportedly confident that the costs can be covered through these revenue streams and support surrounding the event.

More importantly, this is not an ordinary friendly. Brazil are among the biggest sporting brands in the world, and hosting them could give Indian football unprecedented visibility.

The AIFF has also argued that India need to play high-profile opponents if the national team is to raise its stature. An AIFF official told The Times of India that the federation wants India to play such opponents despite the huge ranking difference.

Bhutia himself is not opposed to Brazil visiting India. His objection is primarily about the timing and expenditure.

“Brazil can always come. Argentina, Spain, France can always come and play in India when you are paying that kind of money. You can get any team to come and play, but at the moment I think the timing is wrong.”

The Real Question for AIFF

The Brazil match is not controversial because Indian football should not dream big. It is controversial because Indian football is being asked to decide what kind of big decisions it wants to make.

A Brazil match can sell tickets, attract sponsors, create memories and put India on the global football map. But a sustainable domestic league, financially secure clubs, regular competitive internationals and a stronger player-development pathway are what can potentially change India’s footballing level. And as long as that remains an issue, the backlash shall only grow.
