France’s FIFA World Cup 2026 clash against Iraq could turn into one of the longest nights of the tournament, with severe thunderstorms forecast to hit Philadelphia during Monday’s Group I encounter.

According to weather forecasts for Philadelphia, thunderstorms are expected to move across the region during the match window, raising the possibility of multiple stoppages.

Under FIFA regulations, play must be suspended immediately if lightning is detected within eight miles of the stadium.

If that happens, players will leave the field and supporters will be directed away from their seats into concourses or designated emergency shelter areas until conditions improve.

That encounter was delayed by approximately an hour after lightning strikes were detected near the stadium.

More recently, spectators attending the Netherlands vs Sweden World Cup match were instructed to shelter inside the stadium after the final whistle because of lightning activity in the area.
