If you tuned into Manchester United’s highly anticipated Premier League clash against Brentford at Old Trafford, you likely noticed something significantly different about the Red Devils’ kits.
Instead of the familiar Snapdragon logo that has adorned the front of their shirts since the start of the 2024/2025 season, Michael Carrick’s squad took to the pitch wearing a unique sponsor: (RED).
But why did Manchester United change their shirt sponsor for this specific match? Was it a permanent change or a special occasion? Here is everything you need to know about the meaningful kit switch.
Why are Manchester United wearing New Sponsors?
The temporary kit change is part of a powerful, purpose-driven collaboration between Manchester United, their principal shirt sponsor Snapdragon (Qualcomm Technologies), and the charity organization (RED).
For the second consecutive year, Qualcomm utilized a special clause in their front-of-shirt sponsorship agreement. This clause allows the tech giant to nominate a charitable organization to replace the Snapdragon logo for two matches per season, one for the men’s team and one for the women’s team. For the match against Brentford, they chose to feature (RED) to raise critical awareness and funding for the global fight against health injustices and life-threatening diseases, including AIDS.
What Does the (RED) Charity Do?
Co-founded by U2 frontman Bono 20 years ago, (RED) partners with the world’s most iconic brands to develop products and experiences that raise money for the Global Fund. To date, the organization has generated over $800 million, helping more than 350 million people worldwide get access to life-saving healthcare programs in vulnerable communities.
By utilizing the massive global platform of Manchester United, Snapdragon and (RED) are successfully putting millions of eyes on the fight to eradicate health inequality.
The initiative goes far beyond just a visual change on a football pitch. Manchester United and its partners have ensured that fans can actively participate and generate real-world impact through several avenues:
Limited-Edition Replica Shirts: Supporters can purchase a special-edition Adidas version of the Manchester United home shirt featuring the (RED) logo. All net profits from these sales are donated directly to (RED)’s Global Fund.
The Gates Foundation Match: To double the impact, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has pledged to match the funds raised from the retail sales of these special shirts.
MatchWornShirt Auction
Following the match against Brentford, the actual, match-worn and signed shirts from United’s starting XI and substitutes are being auctioned off via the MatchWornShirt platform. Fans and collectors have a chance to bid on these one-of-a-kind pieces of football history, with proceeds going toward the life-saving global health programs.
