The Calcutta Football League (CFL) Super Six stage has reached its decisive phase, with the championship set to be settled in the final round of fixtures.
Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan Sporting currently lead the standings with four points each, while Bhawanipore remain firmly in contention on three points. East Bengal and United SC have two points apiece, while Coal India are out of the title race with no points.
The final round will see three matches take place simultaneously, with Mohun Bagan U23 facing Mohammedan Sporting, Coal India taking on East Bengal and United SC meeting Bhawanipore. The team finishing with the most points after all three matches will be crowned champions, while goal difference will be the deciding factor if teams finish level on points.
Have a look at the championship scenario for all six clubs here.
Mohun Bagan vs Mohammedan: The Title Decider
The biggest game of the final round will undoubtedly be the clash between Mohun Bagan U23 and Mohammedan Sporting. Both sides have four points and know that victory will guarantee them the CFL Super Six title.
If Mohun Bagan win, they will move to seven points and become champions regardless of the results in the other two matches. Mohammedan face exactly the same equation. A win would take them to seven points, making them champions.
However, a draw would change the entire complexion of the title race. Both Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan would finish on five points, opening the door for the chasing teams.
Bhawanipore Can Steal the Title
Bhawanipore, currently on three points, are the only team outside the top two who can guarantee the championship through their own result if Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan draw.
A victory against United SC would take Bhawanipore to six points, putting them above both Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan’s five-point totals. In that scenario, Bhawanipore would be crowned champions.
A draw or defeat, however, would leave Bhawanipore below five points and end their title hopes.
East Bengal and United SC Need a Perfect Combination
East Bengal and United SC both have two points and must win their final matches to have any chance of lifting the trophy. East Bengal need to beat Coal India, while United SC must defeat Bhawanipore. Either victory would take the respective team to five points.
For either side to become champions, Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan must draw, Bhawanipore must fail to win, and the team concerned must then have the best goal difference among all sides finishing on five points.
Coal India Eliminated
Coal India cannot win the CFL title even if they defeat East Bengal. Their maximum possible tally is three points, which is insufficient to overtake the leading contenders.
The final round therefore promises a dramatic finish, with Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan holding the strongest positions, Bhawanipore waiting for a draw in the big derby, and East Bengal and United SC needing a highly specific combination of results. If multiple teams finish on five points, goal difference will ultimately determine the champion.
