East Bengal have announced the signing of Spanish defender Nacho Monsalve, as the 32-year-old becomes their latest recruitment ahead of the new season.
Monsalve, known for his time at Atletico Madrid and FC Twente in Netherlands, is expected to be a top signing for the Kolkata-based club, who are the defending ISL champions.
Who is Nacho Monsalve?
Spanish defender Nacho Monsalve has enjoyed a well-travelled professional career, carving out a reputation as a dependable centre-back across several European leagues.
Born as Ignacio Monsalve Vicente on April 27, 1994, in Madrid, Spain, Monsalve stands 1.88 metres (6 ft 2 in) tall and primarily operates as a centre-back. Comfortable with both feet, he is known for his composure in possession, aerial ability and positional awareness. His versatility has allowed him to play on either side of central defence, making him a valuable asset throughout his career.
Nacho Monsalve Career
Monsalve began his football journey in the youth academy of Atlético Madrid, joining the club as a teenager and progressing through its highly regarded development system. After impressing with Atlético’s reserve sides, he earned his senior debut under Diego Simeone during the 2015-16 La Liga season. His first-team appearance came in a memorable 5-1 victory over Real Betis, but intense competition for places meant further opportunities with the senior side were limited.
Determined to secure regular playing time, Monsalve moved away from Atlético and embarked on a career that saw him gain experience across multiple European leagues. He featured prominently in Spain’s lower divisions before testing himself in the Netherlands, where he adapted to a more possession-oriented style of football. He later enjoyed productive spells in Bulgaria and Poland, becoming a regular starter and playing an important role for his teams in domestic league competitions.

An interesting aspect of Monsalve’s game is his ability to use both feet comfortably, a relatively uncommon quality among central defenders. This allows him to distribute the ball effectively under pressure and play on either side of the defensive pairing.
His experience in several European leagues has also given him valuable tactical flexibility, and the defender is set to be a crucial part of East Bengal in the upcoming season.
