West Ham are facing likely relegation from the Premier League after a 3-1 loss at Newcastle. The defeat at St James’ Park left Nuno Espirito Santo’s team 18th and still below Tottenham. Their goal difference also worsened, increasing pressure before the final home match against Leeds United next Sunday.
West Ham had travelled to Tyneside knowing victory would lift them into 17th place. Any other outcome meant the threat of dropping into the Championship as early as Tuesday, depending on other results. That scenario now looms, with West Ham reliant on Tottenham losing both remaining fixtures to stay alive.
Newcastle seized control inside 19 minutes, leaving West Ham chasing the match and their survival hopes. A loose pass from Mads Hermansen in the 15th minute began the damage. Harvey Barnes stole possession, sprinted down the right, and crossed for Nick Woltemade, who finished first time on the volley for his first league goal since Christmas.
The second Newcastle goal highlighted the difference in confidence between the sides. A sharp one-touch exchange between Kieran Trippier, Barnes, Bruno Guimaraes and Jacob Ramsey carved West Ham open. Trippier was making his final home appearance for Newcastle. The move released William Osula one-on-one, and Osula scored with a calm left-footed strike.
That early double left Nuno Espirito Santo furious on the touchline. Nuno abandoned West Ham’s 3-4-3 structure after only 26 minutes. Valentin Castellanos came on to lead the line, yet Newcastle still carried more threat. Osula later added a second goal, tapping into an empty net after a neat exchange of passes with Joe Willock.
Osula has recently been preferred to Woltemade in several starting line-ups. At 22 years and 286 days, Osula became the youngest player to score a Premier League brace for Newcastle since Kenedy. Kenedy achieved that against Southampton in March 2018 at 22 years and 30 days, underlining Osula’s growing importance in attack.
West Ham did respond, with substitute Castellanos and El Hadji Malick Diouf both testing Nick Pope before half-time. Newcastle’s third, 20 minutes into the second half, seemed to settle the contest. Castellanos quickly pulled one back with a precise lob from outside the penalty area, then struck the angle of post and crossbar, but West Ham could not force a late surge.
Realistically, West Ham now need to beat Leeds United and hope Tottenham lose both remaining games. Their survival chances were reflected in the latest projections.
| Team | Relegation chance |
|---|---|
| West Ham | 93.8% |
| Tottenham | 6.2% |
Those numbers came from Opta Analyst, whose model now points strongly towards West Ham relegation to the Championship.
West Ham relegation odds and Newcastle’s European target
While West Ham wrestle with relegation probabilities, Newcastle still retain slim European hopes. Newcastle could finish eighth if they beat Fulham next weekend and several other results fall favourably. That scenario would give Newcastle an outside chance of continental qualification, adding significance to their final Premier League match of the season.
Hermansen’s earlier error did at least create an unusual statistic for West Ham. Through Hermansen at Newcastle and Alphonse Areola against Bournemouth in November, West Ham became only the third club to see two different goalkeepers register an assist in one Premier League season. Nuno Espirito Santo gains little comfort from that as West Ham relegation now appears highly probable.
