A 16-year-old boy and an 80-year-old man have been killed in a light aircraft crash near Loch Lomond in Scotland.

Emergency services were called to reports of an incident north-east of the village of Drymen, Stirling, at about 4.45pm on Friday.

Police said the next of kin of the boy and the man, who were pronounced dead at the scene, had been informed.

After the crash, temporary airspace restrictions, including drones, were in place around the village.

Police Scotland said its Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) had been informed, and inquiries were taking place to establish the full circumstances of the incident.

Restrictions were likely to be in place for some time, police said, to allow the AAIB to conduct its investigation.

The Piper Tomahawk II aircraft took off from Glasgow airport on Friday afternoon at 4.17pm, according to data from online flight-tracking tools.

The tracking data showed the plane circled before coming down north of Drymen. The plane stopped transmitting at 4.37pm, according to the data.

Earlier in the day, the plane had taken off from Cumbernauld airport at 11.46am, before flying to Glasgow airport.

It stayed there until about 1pm, then embarked on a flight north-east to Newport-on-Tay, opposite Dundee, before turning round and heading back to Glasgow.

It was on the ground at the airport for just over an hour before it took off again and began its final flight.

Gavin Birch-Williams, the managing director of Glasgow airport, said: “We are aware of an incident involving a light aircraft that departed from Glasgow airport.

“This is a deeply tragic event, and the thoughts and heartfelt sympathies from all at Glasgow airport are with the friends and families affected.”

In a statement, the AAIB said: “An investigation has begun into an accident involving a light aircraft which occurred on 16 October 2026.

“A team has travelled to the accident site near Drymen, north of Glasgow, to make inquiries and gather evidence as part of the process of conducting a safety investigation.”

Officers warned it was a criminal offence to fly in restricted airspace.
