President Donald Trump has demanded that Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed go through metal detectors at the U.S. Capitol building if he were to get elected in November’s midterm elections.

“I’m here to keep a Jihadist Muslim Brotherhood member from becoming a United States senator,” Trump said at a rally in Port Huron, Michigan, Sunday afternoon as he spewed attacks at the Democrat. El-Sayed has vehemently denied any ties to the Islamist organization.

Trump said El-Sayed “should never be allowed inside the halls of our great, beautiful Capitol building in Washington, D.C.,” adding that his supporters will elect his pick, Mike Rogers, a former Republican congressman, to the U.S. Senate.

The president then accused El-Sayed’s family of having terrorist ties, without providing any evidence, and said, “Anyone with that record of support for jihadists would be screened and unable to get a seat on an airplane. They certainly should not give him a seat in the United States Senate.”

“He would be the only senator that will have to go through a metal detector before he’s allowed to go into the Senate. I want him to have a metal detector,” Trump said. “If Abdul gets to the Senate, he would have access to our nation’s most closely guarded national security secrets, and his vote would wield power over our military, our borders, our homeland security, and much more than that.”

El-Sayed disavowed the Muslim Brotherhood at a recent town hall in Caro, Michigan, after being asked by an attendee if he would do so.

“You’re asking the question because implicitly you assume that I’ll have dual loyalties,” El-Sayed said to the attendee. “You assume that somehow I wouldn’t disavow. Or that I’ll have some higher order, allegiance than to the Constitution.”

“I’m gonna swear an oath to the Constitution of the United States. And that Constitution guarantees us all the right to practice whatever faith we want or no faith at all,” El-Sayed said.

The Senate race is tight, with El-Sayed leading Rogers 50 percent to 48 percent among Michigan likely voters in a new Marist poll.

As Trump holds daily rallies to boost Republican candidates’ chances of winning November’s midterm elections, former Democratic President Barack Obama has hopped on the campaign trail. Obama was in Detroit Saturday to stump for El-Sayed, where he told supporters: “Abdul is fighting for change, real change, change that will bring an end to this war.”

Obama also railed against Trump’s unpopular war in Iran at a rally in Cleveland Saturday to support Democrat Amy Acton, who is running for Ohio governor against Republican Vivek Ramaswamy.

“Let’s think about this Iran war. The original rationale was, we’re going to go in there and get them to give up their nuclear program, their nuclear weapons,” the former president said. “Now, the thing was, Iran didn’t have nuclear weapons, because I put a deal in place that everybody acknowledged — kept them from getting nukes. And I didn’t have to fire a missile to do it; I just had to engage in diplomacy.”

Iran signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in 2015, a deal Obama brokered that restricted Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. During his first term, Trump withdrew from the agreement, arguing that it “allowed Iran to continue enriching uranium and — over time — reach the brink of a nuclear breakout.”

Trump launched the Iran war, alongside Israel, in late February, and it has dragged on for nearly eight months. With no end in sight and the midterms less than two weeks away, it could spell a problem for Republicans.

The president is facing dismal approval ratings as Americans struggle with high gas prices brought on by the war and stubborn inflation making everyday necessities more expensive.

A whopping 61 percent of Americans disapproved of Trump’s job as president, while just 39 percent approved, according to a new CBS News/YouGov poll.

When asked about specific issues, 67 percent of Americans disapproved of Trump’s handling of the economy, while just 33 percent approved. Another 67 percent disapproved of the Iran war, while 33 percent approved.

Eighty-three percent of registered voters said lowering the cost of living should be one of the highest priorities for the next Congress, and 72 percent said ending the Iran war should be another top concern, according to a recent Associated Press/NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll.
