Tropical Storm Dolly developed far out in the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday, with forecasters warning that the system could bring heavy rain to portions of the Caribbean.

The storm was situated roughly 1,555 miles (2,500 kilometers) east of the Leeward Islands, carrying maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (64 kph) as it tracked west, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami.

The system and its designation carry no connection to the death of Dolly Parton on Tuesday.

Storms are designated following protocols established by the World Meteorological Organization, which rotates name lists every six years. In the Atlantic region, these lists follow alphabetical order and alternate between male and female names.

Dolly marks the fourth named weather event of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season.

No coastal watches or warnings were in place, but meteorologists noted that heavy rainfall could affect the Leeward Islands across Saturday and Sunday. Heavy precipitation could subsequently reach the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Hispaniola on Sunday and Monday.

Forecasters expect little change in the storm’s intensity over the coming days, though flash flooding remains possible.

The 2026 Atlantic season began when Tropical Storm Arthur made landfall along the U.S. Gulf Coast in June, followed by Tropical Storm Bertha bringing heavy rain to Louisiana and Texas during July. Tropical Storm Cristobal formed and quickly dissolved in the Atlantic earlier in August.

Driven by El Nino conditions, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted a below-average Atlantic season. The agency projected eight to 14 named storms, with three to six reaching hurricane strength and one to three escalating into major hurricanes.

Weather agencies, including the NHC, assign names to simplify public warnings and prevent potential confusion. According to the WMO, names are chosen for brevity, ease of pronunciation and regional familiarity, with regular meetings held to evaluate lists and retire names linked to deadly or destructive storms out of sensitivity.

One name from the 2025 season was retired—Melissa—a Category 5 hurricane that caused widespread devastation across the Caribbean.
