Tottenham head coach Martin Ho stated that Spurs have carefully assessed the risks involved in allowing Bethany England to leave at the end of the season. The club confirmed on Thursday that the captain will depart after three-and-a-half years leading the attack in north London.
England prepares for a farewell appearance in front of home supporters when Tottenham face London City Lionesses on Sunday. Spurs sit fifth in the Women’s Super League, two points short of their highest WSL points tally, although Champions League qualification is already out of reach.
Since arriving from Chelsea midway through the 2022-23 campaign, Bethany England transformed Tottenham’s forward line. England struck 12 league goals in 12 games during that first half-season. Across all competitions, England scored 38 times for Spurs, including three goals in the 2023-24 FA Cup run that ended in defeat to Manchester United.
Tottenham’s 2023-24 FA Cup campaign, which featured Bethany England heavily, took the club to a historic final appearance. Spurs were beaten 4-0 by Manchester United in that showpiece, yet England’s three goals across the competition highlighted the central role played by the striker throughout that season.
Discussing the decision to part ways with a key player, Martin Ho underlined that Tottenham weighed the long-term strategy. “Any decision you make there is always going to be a risk, but I believe we are aligned and moving forward and confident in what we need to do,” said Ho.
Ho stressed how important Bethany England has been, both on and off the pitch, during the stay with Tottenham. “Beth has been a huge part of what we’ve done; she’s played a huge and key role here, and I have no doubt in her future endeavours, she will do the same. I have huge respect for her and what she has done for the game. If you look at what she has achieved in terms of appearances and goals scored over that period of time, she will go down as one of the greats for sure.”
Ho also explained why Tottenham wanted Bethany England, and other departing players, to have a proper send-off with supporters. “I want to make sure that anyone who leaves the club gets the opportunity to say bye to the fans, the fans get the opportunity to show their appreciation and respect to them,” added Ho.
Ho accepted that such choices are rarely popular, but believes the manner of farewell matters. “You can do it at the end of the season, but I don’t think it shows any respect or courage. Hopefully, they are happy with the decision. They are never happy with the decisions, but I think they are happy that they get the chance to say bye to the fans because they have built such a strong relationship with them while they have been here.”
