Tigres UANL claimed a narrow 1-0 victory over Nashville SC at GEODIS Park, securing a first-leg advantage in their Champions Cup semi-final. Angel Correa delivered the decisive moment with a first-half strike, leaving Nashville needing a turnaround in the second leg next week.
The visitors managed the game with control after taking the lead and limited Nashville to few clear sights of goal. Nashville finished the night with nine attempts and an expected goals figure of 0.34, compared with Tigres’ 13 shots and xG of 1.64.
Correa, a World Cup winner with Argentina, again produced on a major stage and pushed Tigres closer to a first Champions Cup final since 2020, the year Tigres lifted the trophy. Operating from midfield, Correa combined creativity, work rate and composure in advanced areas throughout the contest.
| Player | Chances created | Total duels | Possession won in final third | Passes in final third |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Angel Correa | 4 | 12 | 2 | 13 |
| Fernando Gorriaran | – | – | – | 15 |
Correa ended with team-leading numbers for chances created, total duels and high turnovers, while only Fernando Gorriaran attempted more passes in the final third, with 15 to Correa’s 13. Tigres also extended an impressive habit in this competition, remaining unbeaten in six semi-final first legs since 2008.
Conditions disrupted the evening early on, as kick-off was delayed one hour because of a severe thunderstorm. When play finally started, Nashville began aggressively and believed Hany Mukhtar had scored in the sixth minute, but the header was ruled out quickly for offside.
Nashville were already missing striker Sam Surridge through injury and then lost Edvard Tagseth after 18 minutes, adding to the problems. Cristian Espinoza almost punished Tigres soon after, drawing a strong tip over the bar from Nahuel Guzman with a powerful drive from distance.
The breakthrough arrived at the other end on 33 minutes. Tigres broke forward and the ball fell to Correa outside the area. Correa met it with a controlled half-volley from around 25 yards that beat Brian Schwake, despite the goalkeeper’s attempt to claw the shot away.
Chances were scarce after half-time, with Tigres happy to manage their lead and Nashville struggling to break down a compact defence. The clearest opportunity fell to Tigres substitute Marcelo Flores in the 73rd minute, but Schwake gathered the effort without difficulty to keep Nashville within one goal.
| Team | Goals | Shots | Expected goals (xG) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tigres UANL | 1 | 13 | 1.64 |
| Nashville SC | 0 | 9 | 0.34 |
Tigres leave GEODIS Park with a deserved edge based on chances created and efficiency in both boxes. Nashville now travel for the return leg knowing a single goal deficit is still manageable, but also aware Tigres hold strong form in Champions Cup semi-final openers.
