Benjamin Sesko backs Bruno Fernandes to claim the Premier League Player of the Season award after a standout campaign for Manchester United, with Fernandes driving the team towards a Champions League return and building strong on-field links that have helped lift Michael Carrick’s side into a firm top-four position.
United sit third after a 1-0 victory over Chelsea, when Fernandes created Matheus Cunha’s decisive goal in the 43rd minute, giving the team an eight-point cushion over sixth-placed Brighton and leaving the club well placed to secure qualification for UEFA’s main competition for the 2026-27 season.
Sesko has already scored nine league goals in 2025-26, with four of those supplied by Fernandes, and the forward believes the captain’s influence stretches beyond statistics, arguing that the midfielder’s vision, work rate and guidance in training justify recognition as the division’s top performer this season.
Sesko detailed how Fernandes shapes daily work at Carrington, stressing the value of constant advice and direction. “I’m also getting a lot of instruction from Bruno, Sesko toldSky Sports. Every single training session, after training, sometimes before training. Whatever he tells you, just do it, don’t think twice. And that’s what I said. I’m really grateful to have this opportunity to be around him.”
Fernandes, aged 31, has produced 18 Premier League assists this season. Only Thierry Henry in 2002-03 for Arsenal, Kevin De Bruyne in 2019-20 for Manchester City, both with 20, and Mesut Ozil in 2015-16 for Arsenal, with 19, have managed to create more goals in a single English top-flight campaign.
The United captain has 26 direct goal contributions, made up of eight goals and 18 assists, a tally bettered only by Manchester City’s Erling Haaland on 31, while Fernandes leads the league for chance creation with 109 opportunities fashioned, underlining the statistical strength behind Sesko’s public support.
Premier League Player of the Season race and United’s outlook
Asked directly whether Fernandes deserves Premier League Player of the Season, Sesko responded with clear loyalty. “He’s great. He’s my team-mate. And of course, always stand up [for my team-mates], yeah, he should win it.” The forward’s comments highlight the dressing-room view of Fernandes’ authority and consistency this year.
Data from the Opta supercomputer reflects United’s strong position entering their next league match against Brentford at Old Trafford, with Carrick’s side given a 51.5% chance of victory in the simulations and projected to fall outside the Premier League’s top five places in only 1.4% of modelled outcomes.

United seek to avoid consecutive home league defeats for the first time since May 2025, having lost their previous Old Trafford fixture to rivals Leeds United, and Sesko believes the current run under Carrick can form a platform for future success, both in domestic competitions and in Europe.
Reflecting on the wider season, Sesko described the mood inside the squad and personal growth. “I think we did great. Still, some games left, but I think we’re doing great. We have a great spirit in the team, Sesko added. I’m learning a lot from the experience. We are here, great players, great coaching staff. I would like to really achieve some trophies here. I think there will be something that we just can’t forget, life at all. And, of course, we need to do a lot for it, but I believe we have the capacity to do that.”
With Fernandes driving chance creation, Haaland leading the scoring charts and United closing on Champions League qualification, Sesko’s praise captures both the current importance of the captain’s contribution and the belief that this period, if converted into trophies, will become a defining chapter for the club and its players.
