Nottingham Forest earned a 3-1 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, moving six points clear of the Premier League relegation places. The result extended Forest’s unbeaten league sequence to seven matches and marked a third straight win, easing pressure as the season’s final weeks approach.
Despite Vitor Pereira making sweeping changes to the Chelsea line-up, Forest punished the hosts with ruthless finishing. Taiwo Awoniyi struck twice, Igor Jesus converted an early penalty and Chelsea’s poor form deepened as Calum McFarlane’s side slipped to a sixth successive Premier League defeat.
Forest started at high speed. After just 97 seconds, Awoniyi met a cross from Dilane Bakwa and headed in the opener. The visitors doubled their advantage in the 15th minute when Igor Jesus scored from the spot, after Malo Gusto was penalised for pulling Awoniyi’s shirt in the area.
Chelsea then passed up a key chance to respond before half-time. Cole Palmer missed a penalty that could have halved the deficit. Early in the second half, Forest stretched the lead to 3-0 as Awoniyi arrived at close range to finish from Morgan Gibbs-White’s low centre.
Forest’s attacking numbers matched their clinical display. Awoniyi scored with both of his attempts and accounted for 1.1 of Forest’s 2.07 expected goals. Chelsea produced 21 shots worth 1.93 expected goals, yet McFarlane’s team again struggled with decision-making and execution in the final third.
“Massive.”
Forest did not leave unscathed. Gibbs-White went off with a head injury, creating doubt over involvement in Forest’s Europa League semi-final second leg on Thursday. Joao Pedro had a headed effort ruled out for offside before finally scoring with a stoppage-time bicycle kick, ending Chelsea’s 634-minute league goal drought.
Joao Pedro’s goal was the 20th of the season in all competitions. The forward won a match-high eight duels and completed four of six dribbles, also a match-best figure, although the late strike only reduced the margin as Forest tightened control of their Premier League survival battle.
