New Delhi, Oct 12: Kolkata football giants Mohun Bagan Super Giant will look to carry their winning momentum from the IFA Shield campaign when they face NorthEast United FC in Guwahati in their opening match today. The Highlanders will look to make a strong start against the Mariners in front of a packed home crowd.

Both teams have reasons to target a positive result as the ISL returns to its regular home-and-away format after last season’s shortened campaign.

NorthEast United FC vs Mohun Bagan: Recent Form

NorthEast United FC

NorthEast United will be eager to bounce back from their disappointing IFA Shield semi-final exit, where they suffered a heavy 7-2 defeat against East Bengal. The Highlanders face another formidable challenge against Mohun Bagan, whose attacking strength poses a serious threat across the pitch.

Head coach Juan Pedro Benali remains confident in his squad’s depth and ability to adapt tactically. The return of forward Allaeddine Ajaraie provides a significant boost, with the striker expected to spearhead the attack after winning both the Golden Boot and Golden Ball awards in the 2024-25 ISL season.

To compete against Mohun Bagan, NorthEast United must tighten their defensive structure and limit the opposition’s space in dangerous areas. While playing at home could work in their favour, a far more disciplined defensive display will be essential if they are to avoid a repeat of their recent Shield setback.

Mohun Bagan

Mohun Bagan head into the 2026 ISL season on the back of a 1-0 victory over arch-rivals East Bengal in the IFA Shield final on October 8. However, their 1-1 draw against NorthEast United earlier in the tournament highlighted the Highlanders’ ability to challenge the Kolkata giants.
Head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis wants his team to play with greater intensity and aggression, with 3-4-3 and 4-2-3-1 formations offering tactical flexibility. New signings, including Lallianzuala Chhangte, Dejan Dražić and Rahul Bheke, will strengthen the squad, while Scottish forward Lee Harry Erwin will look to build on his goal in the Shield final.
