Vitor Pereira believes Morgan Gibbs-White has done enough to earn a place in England’s World Cup squad after a decisive hat-trick for Nottingham Forest against Burnley, a result that turned a tense relegation battle into a more comfortable position, with Forest moving five points clear of the drop.
Gibbs-White has not featured in Thomas Tuchel’s past two England selections, including a 35-player group named in March, yet Pereira is clear about the midfielder’s international credentials and leadership impact on Nottingham Forest’s campaign. He said: “He [Gibbs-White] deserves that. This is just my opinion, but if I can give that, I think he deserves it, because he has the quality, he has the qualities of a leader,” Pereira said the win over Burnley.
The 26-year-old is enjoying his most productive Premier League season, with 12 league goals so far, which is already Gibbs-White’s highest return in any league campaign, discounting play-off matches. Since the beginning of March, no player in the Premier League has scored more across all competitions than the English midfielder, who has hit seven during that spell.
Gibbs-White’s treble also secured a notable piece of history for Nottingham Forest in the Premier League era, as the midfielder became only the third Forest player to record a top-flight hat-trick. He followed Kevin Campbell and Chris Wood, who both achieved the feat in different seasons and fixtures for the club.
| Nottingham Forest player | Opponent | Competition | Date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kevin Campbell | Coventry City | Premier League | August 1996 |
| Chris Wood | Newcastle United | Premier League | December 2023 |
| Chris Wood | Brighton | Premier League | February 2025 |
| Morgan Gibbs-White | Burnley | Premier League | April 2026 |
Burnley had taken a 1-0 advantage into half-time at the City Ground and looked in control before the match swung. Gibbs-White then produced a clinical 15-minute burst after the interval, completing a hat-trick that turned the game on its head and helped Nottingham Forest secure a 4-1 win in front of home supporters.

Pereira highlighted Gibbs-White’s attitude during difficult spells in matches, noting that some players may hide when a team struggles, avoiding the ball, while Gibbs-White continually shows for possession, seeks responsibility and aims to score or create chances. Pereira also praised how Gibbs-White adapts tactically between attacking in central pockets and defending out wide without complaint.
When things are not happening in the way that you want, when the team is struggling in the game, a lot of players could prefer to hide themselves, they do not want the ball. But Morgan wants the ball, he wants the responsibility, he wants to score goals, he wants to assist. When I told him that, when we are attacking, I wanted him to play in the pocket but, when we defend, he must defend on the side, it was not a problem for him. He understands the game. He has the spirit.
With Nottingham Forest gaining valuable breathing space above the relegation zone and Gibbs-White delivering decisive numbers alongside tactical discipline, Pereira’s public support adds further weight to the midfielder’s case for selection as England finalise the World Cup squad for the United States, especially given the player’s form since early March.
