Mohun Bagan Super Giant will look to make the most of their first home appearance of the Indian Super League (ISL) season when they welcome Chennaiyin FC to the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK).
After suffering a defeat against NorthEast United FC in their opening fixture, the Mariners responded with a victory away from home against Sporting Delhi FC. They will now aim to carry that momentum into their first outing in front of their home supporters.
For head coach Panos Dilmperis, the upcoming encounter presents an opportunity to bring greater consistency to the team’s performances and deliver a convincing display in Kolkata. However, Chennaiyin FC are expected to provide a stern test as they look to get their campaign back on track.
Addressing Mohun Bagan’s performance in front of goal, Dilmperis highlighted the need for his players to convert their opportunities, saying, “We have to score goals, plain and simple. I don’t want to go back to the Northeast game but when you create around 26 chances and fail to score at least a goal, it doesn’t feel right.”
Chennaiyin FC arrive in Kolkata seeking a much-needed turnaround after a disappointing run of results. The Marina Machans have collected just two points from their last two matches and subsequently suffered a defeat against Bengaluru FC.
Securing three points against Mohun Bagan would provide a significant lift to their campaign, although they will need a disciplined and determined performance against a home side eager to establish its rhythm.
Under Clifford Miranda, Chennaiyin have strengthened their squad with several promising additions. Ramon Tarque, Madih Talal, Nikola Stojanovic, Nuno Reis, Brison Fernandes and Ayush Dev Chhetri have expanded the team’s options, offering additional depth and quality across different positions.
Meanwhile, Anirudh Thapa will be another player attracting attention ahead of the contest. The midfielder recently scored India’s historic goal against Uruguay, an achievement he described with a sense of pride when discussing the experience ahead of the Chennaiyin fixture.
“Obviously it feels surreal to score against such a world-class team, and when you come back to this level, you can feel what you’ve achieved.”
Mohun Bagan, however, face a few selection concerns before the match. Apuia is reportedly struggling with a fever, while Miguel and Alberto are not fully fit to play the entire 90 minutes. These fitness issues could force the coaching staff to reconsider their options while finalising the starting lineup.
Managing player fitness and squad depth will therefore be a key consideration for Dilmperis. The Mohun Bagan coach must find the right balance between maintaining an attacking approach and ensuring his players can cope with the demands of another league fixture.
The final team selection, along with the contributions of players stepping into the lineup, could have a significant bearing on the outcome as the Mariners pursue another victory.
