Mohamed Salah is racing to overcome a suspected hamstring injury as Liverpool consider whether the Crystal Palace match was the forward’s last appearance for the club. Salah left Anfield to a full ovation during the 3-1 win, while Virgil van Dijk stressed that a proper farewell will happen.
The Egypt international overstretched for the ball on the edge of the box and was substituted for Jeremie Frimpong in the 59th minute. Salah walked slowly off the pitch and down the tunnel, appearing to soak up every second of applause as Liverpool supporters stood to recognise the nine-year spell.
Liverpool are waiting for scan results to judge the level of damage and whether Salah can feature again this season. There is a clear chance the Crystal Palace victory was the final outing of Salah’s Liverpool career, after the 33-year-old confirmed this campaign will be the last at Anfield.
Van Dijk underlined that the forward is pushing hard to return before the season closes. “I know he is doing everything in his power to be back on the pitch as soon as possible, Van Dijk said. If you get injured at this stage of the season, especially in the situation he is in, there are only two more home games left for him.”
Salah’s Liverpool record highlights the scale of the potential loss. The forward has played 440 matches in all competitions, scoring 257 goals and supplying 119 assists. During that period, Salah has lifted nine major trophies with the club, including two Premier League titles and the 2018-19 Champions League.
Liverpool’s final Premier League game of the season comes against Brentford at Anfield on May 24. Van Dijk stated that even if Salah is ruled out by the hamstring problem, the club and supporters will still recognise the contribution. The defender believes the farewell will match the scale of the achievements.
Mohamed Salah injury, Merseyside derby impact and records
If the Crystal Palace fixture proves to be Salah’s last game, the forward closed the Liverpool chapter with another key Merseyside moment earlier in April. Salah scored in the first Merseyside derby held at Hill Dickinson Stadium on April 19, a match that Liverpool edged 2-1 against Everton.
That derby also featured Van Dijk’s dramatic 100th-minute winning header. Salah’s goal drew level with Steven Gerrard’s tally of nine strikes in Premier League Merseyside derbies. The forward therefore became the joint-top scorer in league meetings between Liverpool and Everton, adding another milestone to the statistics.

Van Dijk described the emotional impact around Salah’s situation and the uncertainty over the remaining fixtures. “It’s a combination of feelings that go through your mind. Hopefully he won’t be long. Maybe he’s back next week, maybe not. I have no idea. He will get the send-off regardless. I don’t think that is the thing at this point, we shouldn’t think too far ahead. Knowing Mo, he is a quick healer and with the right people around him, let’s see.”
With scans still to come and only a limited number of home matches left, Liverpool now balance medical caution with the desire for one more appearance. Whatever the diagnosis, Anfield is set to mark Salah’s nine-year spell and the goals, assists and trophies that shaped a successful era.
