Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors Corporation has unveiled its all-new Pajero full-size flagship SUV, the fifth-generation of the model, a full five years after production of the fourth-generation model was discontinued at the company’s Sakahogi plant in Japan in 2021.
Mitsubishi has continued to produce its mid-size Pajero Sport SUV at its Laem Chabang plant in Thailand, which is sold in markets across Southeast Asia, Australia, the Middle East and Latin America. This model is based on the Mitsubishi Triton/L200 pickup truck’s ladder-frame chassis.
The new full-size Pajero SUV will also be produced in Thailand, and launched locally by the end of the year before it is rolled out in over 100 markets worldwide next year, including Japan and Australia in the first quarter of 2027. The company noted that since the model was first launched in 1982, cumulative sales across the first four generations amounted to 3.29 million units.

Mitsubishi said that the new Pajero features “strong horizontal lines complemented by a functional, advanced, and finely crafted interior. Inside and out, signature motifs from previous Pajero generations are woven in throughout the vehicle, creating a design worthy of a new-generation flagship.”
The new model is equipped with Mitsubishi’s Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) drive system, which integrates control of acceleration, cornering, and braking to deliver “precise and intuitive vehicle behavior.” It also features the Super Select 4WD-II (SS4-II) system, which “balances outstanding off-road performance with ease of use in everyday driving.”
The company added that the new Pajero is built on a “highly rigid, durable ladder frame and a carefully tuned suspension system that helps maintain tyre contact with the road. The technologies encourage drivers to enjoy travel with confidence on any road and take the next step toward new adventures with peace of mind.”
The new Pajero is powered by a specially developed 2.4L clean diesel engine featuring a wide-range single variable geometry turbocharger (VGT), delivering a maximum torque of 480 Nm and “providing strong and responsive acceleration from standstill through to high-speed driving.” The engine is paired with a newly developed 8-speed automatic transmission (8AT) with sport mode, which the company says offers smooth and seamless gear changes.

Mitsubishi Motors’ CEO, Keisuke Kishiura, said in a statement: “Under our Mid- to Long-Term Vision for the 2030s, we aim to enhance customer satisfaction and corporate value by developing distinctive products and strengthening our brand, while further reinforcing what makes Mitsubishi Motors unique. The all-new Pajero is the first model to bring this vision to life. As our flagship model, it will lead not only the Pajero series to follow, but the entire Mitsubishi Motors lineup. Evolved with a new level of refinement, the all-new Pajero is a premium cross-country SUV that drivers can rely on in any situation.”
