Millwall stayed in the automatic promotion race after a stoppage-time equaliser earned a 1-1 draw at Leicester City, lifting Alex Neil’s side to second in the Championship, although Ipswich Town remain only one point behind with two games in hand, so Millwall’s top-two hopes still depend on other results during the final week.
The match swung late at the King Power Stadium, where relegated Leicester City moved ahead in the 78th minute when Harry Souttar forced the ball over the line from close range, before Macaulay Langstaff struck in the final minute of normal time, securing a point that may yet prove vital in Millwall’s promotion push.
Alex Neil admitted there is no clear answer yet on whether this single point secures automatic promotion, telling Sky Sports: “It’ll be proven over the next few days whether a point is enough”, with Ipswich Town still controlling their own destiny, but Millwall at least ensured they remain firmly in the mix entering the closing fixtures.
Across the 90 minutes, Millwall created more pressure and chances than Leicester City, registering 22 shots and an expected goals figure of 1.94, while Leicester City recorded 10 attempts and 0.93 xG, underlining how Millwall spent long spells on the front foot despite briefly trailing near the end.
Millwall’s performance also continued a strong away campaign in the Championship, with the club now collecting 41 points from 23 league matches on the road this season, with a record of 11 wins, seven draws and four defeats, matching Millwall’s joint-highest away points tally in a league season, level with the 2000-01 campaign.
Neil praised the squad’s effort and mentality, saying: “I couldn’t ask any more from the players but we had chances before they scored. We pushed and we pushed, even after we scored – I certainly can’t fault the players, the lads that started were excellent and those that came on were excellent. Games are decided by moments – it got bundled in at the back stick and we just need to get a flick on it and get it out of the way but then we showed the character to get the goal and try to go on and score the winner.”
Key match numbers for Millwall and Leicester City are shown below, highlighting Millwall’s territorial and attacking edge despite the shared result, which leaves both promotion and final league positions to be confirmed over the coming days as Ipswich Town complete their remaining fixtures.

Reflecting on the wider promotion picture, Neil stressed that Millwall will wait to see what Ipswich Town do in their remaining matches, stating: “If Ipswich go and do what they need to then we’ll take stock at that point but as far as I’m concerned, we’ve had an unbelievable season and we’re not writing anything off.”, underlining that Millwall remain committed to chasing every remaining opportunity in the Championship race.
