Manchester United tightened control of a Champions League place with a 2-1 victory over Brentford at Old Trafford, moving 11 points clear in the qualification race. Early goals from Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko proved decisive, despite a late strike from Mathias Jensen that created tense closing moments.
The result came at the end of an open Premier League contest, in which both sides created chances and kept the tempo high. United made better use of key moments, while Brentford missed several first-half openings that could have changed the match’s course.
Bruno Fernandes again dictated much of United’s attacking play under Michael Carrick, providing the assist for Sesko’s goal. That pass brought Fernandes his 19th Premier League assist of the season, leaving the captain just one behind the competition record held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
Fernandes continued a strong personal run as well. The midfielder became the first United player since Robin van Persie, between November 2012 and January 2013, to score or assist in 7+ consecutive Premier League matches, reaching that mark over a 10-game sequence.
United began aggressively and nearly scored inside two minutes. Kobbie Mainoo drove past several defenders into the box, then squared for Amad Diallo. Diallo’s effort beat Caoimhin Kelleher but was cleared off the line by Sepp van den Berg, denying an immediate breakthrough.
Harry Maguire then tested Kelleher from a Fernandes corner, forcing a sharp save. From another dead-ball delivery by Fernandes in the 11th minute, Casemiro escaped his marker and headed in at the back post, giving United a deserved early lead after sustained pressure.
Manchester United vs Brentford Premier League: Brentford chances and Sesko’s crucial strike
Brentford responded with attacking intent, creating three opportunities for top scorer Igor Thiago. None were converted, and United survived a dangerous spell. Senne Lammens also made a superb reflex stop to prevent Ayden Heaven diverting Mikkel Damsgaard’s cross into the goalkeeper’s own net.
The visitors’ wastefulness proved costly just before half-time. Fernandes held possession near the area, waited for the right angle, then slipped a pass through to Sesko. The forward wrong-footed Nathan Collins and fired past Kelleher, doubling United’s advantage two minutes before the interval.
Manchester United vs Brentford Premier League: Second-half response and late tension
After the break, Brentford pressed higher and almost halved the deficit when Dango Ouattara struck the post. United remained threatening on transitions but could not extend the lead. The match grew stretched, with both teams committing players forward whenever space appeared.
Brentford finally scored in the 87th minute. Jensen shaped a controlled effort from the edge of the area, guiding the ball in off the left post. The away side then pushed for an equaliser, yet Damsgaard’s late header went straight into Lammens’ arms.
Manchester United vs Brentford Premier League: Key numbers and streaks
Underlying data highlighted Brentford’s frustration. United recorded an expected goals value of 1.27 from 11 attempts. Brentford generated 1.43 xG from 12 shots but converted only once. Clinical finishing, rather than overall chance volume, separated the sides on the scoreboard.

Brentford’s poor league run extended with this defeat. The Bees are now winless in six Premier League fixtures, with five draws and one loss. It is their longest sequence without victory since a nine-game stretch between February and April 2024 in the same competition.
Fernandes’ consistency at Old Trafford also stood out. The captain became just the third United player to score or assist in 8+ successive top-flight home matches, following Cristiano Ronaldo’s 10-game streak in 2008 and Wayne Rooney’s eight-game run between December 2009 and March 2010.
The victory strengthened United’s push for Champions League qualification and maintained positive momentum under Carrick. Brentford left Old Trafford with credit for their attacking intent but also with more pressure, as their extended winless spell continued despite competitive performances and credible underlying numbers.
