Lionel Messi added yet another record to his legendary career after inspiring Inter Miami CF to a commanding 4-2 win over Toronto FC in Major League Soccer on Saturday.
Messi scored once and provided two assists during the win, becoming the fastest player in MLS history to reach 100 goal contributions.
The Argentine superstar reached the milestone in just 64 regular-season matches, smashing the previous league record held by former Toronto star Sebastian Giovinco, who needed 95 matches to hit the same mark.
Messi reaches 100 MLS goal contributions in record time
Since arriving in the United States midway through the 2023 season, Messi has transformed Inter Miami’s attack and rewritten MLS records almost immediately.
After Saturday’s performance against Toronto, Messi’s league numbers now stand at:
- 59 goals
- 41 assists
- 100 goal contributions
- achieved in only 64 MLS games
No player in league history has reached the century mark faster.
| Player | Matches | Goals | Assists |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lionel Messi | 64 | 59 | 41 |
| Sebastian Giovinco | 95 | 58 | 42 |
| Robbie Keane | 96 | 62 | 39 |
| Carlos Vela | 98 | 62 | 38 |
| Josef Martinez | 105 | 88 | 12 |
Lionel Messi and De Paul run the show for Inter Miami
The win also marked a strong response from Inter Miami after their dramatic 4-3 home defeat to Orlando City last week despite leading 3-0.
Miami looked far sharper this time, storming into a four-goal lead before conceding two late consolation goals.
Rodrigo De Paul opened the scoring in the 44th minute with a free-kick after reacting quickest to a rebound off the wall.
Interestingly, Messi allowed De Paul to take the free kick despite usually handling all direct set-pieces for Miami.
Messi then combined with De Paul to set up Luis Suárez for Miami’s second goal before assisting defender Sergio Reguilón for the third.
De Paul later returned the favour by setting up Messi for Miami’s fourth goal in the 75th minute.
The Argentine now has nine MLS goals this season, just one behind the current league leader.
“We had to win”: Messi reacts after Inter Miami bounce back
Speaking after the match, Messi admitted the team badly needed a response following recent results.
“It was a hard game and it was difficult to play, especially in the first half,” Messi said.
“But we were able to get an important win because we had to win given the recent results and how things happened, so I am happy.”
Inter Miami continue strong road form
The victory improved Inter Miami’s record to 6-2-4 and extended their road winning streak to six matches.
Toronto, meanwhile, fell to 3-4-5 despite a late brace from rookie Emilio Aristizábal.
But once again, the night belonged to Messi – who continues to dominate MLS while breaking records at a pace the league has never seen before.
