Vice President JD Vance has rebuked anyone selling access to government officials following a bombshell report that accused Kimberly Guilfoyle, the U.S. ambassador to Greece, of texting a donor to President Donald Trump to ask for money.

Days before her Senate confirmation hearing on July 9, 2025, Guilfoyle, the former fiancée of Donald Trump Jr., pleaded with Eric Deters, who was trying to get the Trump administration’s attention for personal tax and legal issues, to send $100,000 to pay off her American Express card, according to a Wall Street Journal report published Wednesday.

Guilfoyle disputed the authenticity of the texts between her and Deters, her lawyer, Jesse Binnall, told the Journal.

When asked about a hypothetical situation that strongly hinted towards Guilfoyle’s scandal, Vance said, “Obviously, I don’t love that.”

“Do you have any reaction to a U.S. government official, in this case a U.S. ambassador, asking someone to pay off debt in exchange for access to other government officials?” CBS News’ Jennifer Jacobs asked the vice president during a press conference on the administration’s crackdown on alleged fraud in work visa programs Thursday.

“I don’t know exactly who you are talking about; I don’t know the full details,” Vance said.

“Of course I don’t like anybody selling access to another government official, certainly a high-level government official, but I assume you are talking about a specific case and I can’t say with confidence that the case you’re talking about is actually reflective of the way you’re describing it,” the vice president continued.

“I’d like to get the full story before offering a real opinion.”

Guilfoyle told Deters that she needed her credit card balance to be paid down before her confirmation hearing.

“Honey, please I need you to get this done for me today,” she said, according to a text message sent July 3, 2025, that was reviewed by the Journal.

Deters reportedly didn’t end up giving Guilfoyle the money, telling her it would cost him his marriage.

CNN Senior Political Contributor Scott Jennings, who has routinely defended the Trump administration on air, trashed Guilfoyle’s reported texts, calling them “unseemly.”

“It’s extremely unseemly, these text messages. There’s no other way to read it. Again, may not be illegal. Has to be investigated. I assume that at the State Department, that is the next thing that will happen,” he told his fellow panelists on The Arena with Kasie Hunt Thursday.

While on a trip to Greece, Secretary of State Marco Rubio lashed out at reporters when asked about the scandal.

“You guys somehow walk around thinking that because some source told you something and you reported it, it’s the gospel. It’s not the gospel. It’s not the gospel for me,” he said Thursday.

Jennings gave some advice to Guilfoyle: “If I were in her shoes right now, I would be considering what I wanted to tell the president, the secretary of state about my future.”

“Because when you’re in an appointed position like this, and you hold a position of trust with the government, and then you become a distraction or an embarrassment to your principles, that’s a problem,” the political pundit said.

“And if this story continues to spiral, or more bad information were to come out — only she would know that — and she needs to be transparent with her principles about that.”
