The death of Jackie, a beloved 14-year-old bald eagle from Southern California, has been met with grief among her millions of online followers — and an outpouring of anger directed at the caregivers who attempted to save her.

Jackie, who captured international attention through a viral livestream in the Big Bear Valley, died naturally on Aug. 10 after weeks of treatment. She was initially rescued on July 18 after being found grounded following an altercation with two younger eagles.

Veterinarians at the Ojai Raptor Center discovered she suffered from severe anemia, emaciation and dehydration. But despite receiving blood transfusions and oxygen therapy, her health declined.

State wildlife officials later indicated that Jackie suffered a large blood clot in her wing and kidney, though necropsy results from the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance remain pending, as reported by KTLA. Her remains will eventually be transferred to the National Eagle Repository under federal law.

Following her death, staff members at the Ojai Raptor Center and the nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley faced severe criticism from online followers, The Washington Post reported. Caregivers were subjected to repeated phone calls, unexpected visits and harassing messages on personal social media accounts.

In response, staff restricted public comments on certain updates, noting that the volume of inquiries had become unmanageable.

Some fans raised concern over the care the eagle received.

Christian Weaver, a long-time viewer of the nest livestream, voiced frustration on social media, questioning the timeline of Jackie’s treatment and whether additional interventions could have helped, according to The Washington Post. Others launched online petitions demanding more frequent medical updates.

The overwhelming viewer reaction highlights the strong emotional bond modern audiences form with wildlife through digital feeds.

Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Jack E. Davis told the publication that public perception of the species has shifted dramatically over time, moving from historical destruction to deep personal attachment, which can lead viewers to berate staff when outcomes go wrong.

Amy Ries, who operates an eagle webcam in Iowa, told The Washington Post that public livestreams frequently triggered invasive fan behavior, expressing sympathy for the California team’s experience.

“As soon as I heard that something was going on with Jackie, I felt bad for them,” Ries said. “They are going to have an invasion of their private life that will be cruel and unnecessary.”

Despite the tension online, the organizations involved have continued to update the public while honoring the bird’s legacy.

In a statement posted to Facebook, Friends of Big Bear Valley directed supporters to a specialized resource page hosted by the Ojai Raptor Center.

“Friends of Big Bear Valley does not have any input on how Jackie’s remains are handled,” organizers wrote. “Along with all of you, our FOBBV is heartbroken over Jackie’s passing. Thank you for your patience while the team takes a step back allowing them time to grieve this loss.”

Chris Eksteen, Executive Director of the Ojai Raptor Center, reflected on the center’s efforts in a released statement.

“Caring for Jackie has been a great responsibility and an extraordinary privilege,” Eksteen wrote. “I could not be prouder of our team and the remarkable collaboration of veterinarians, specialists, wildlife agencies and partner organizations who came together on her behalf. Throughout her time in our care, her welfare remained at the center of everything we did.

“While we are heartbroken by her loss, I am grateful to everyone who contributed their expertise, time and compassion to her care. We are also deeply grateful for the way Patient 26-519 brought people together through a shared love of wildlife.”

Reactions across social media reflected a mix of mourning, nostalgia, and lingering questions.

“Jackie and Shadow were the ones that inspired others to donate over ten million dollars for making an area in Big Bear into a wildlife protected habitat,” fan Sherri Batemon wrote. “It’s all going to go down into valuable Eagles Interesting history. With the passing of Jackie, the entire heartwarming story brings wonderful closure and will always live on in our hearts.”

Other followers raised technical questions regarding the illness.

“I saw that another eagle died with similar symptoms,” Suretha Du Plessis wrote. “Could these two deaths maybe be an alarm sounding that there is more to investigate?”

One fan wondered whether medical testing would eventually provide clearer answers.

“They were still awaiting further test results, is there a chance that over time they would ever know the true cause of her illness?” Chris Montgomery wrote. “Just curious. Jackie was an amazing Eagle that gave so many people great pleasure in following her life.”

Public tributes are also taking place in person. The Ontario Tower Buzzers baseball team announced it will host “Fly High, Jackie Night” at ONT Field on Aug. 23, with half of specific ticket sales benefiting Friends of Big Bear Valley, KTLA reported.

First monitored via webcam in 2015, Jackie and her long-term mate, Shadow, accumulated more than 460 million views on YouTube, successfully hatching 10 eaglets across their years together in the San Bernardino National Forest.
