Lisandro Martinez has opened a fresh front in Manchester United’s crisis after publicly criticising the club’s hierarchy following their 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.
The Argentine defender questioned the club’s transfer strategy, demanded greater ambition and suggested that responsibility for United’s struggles extends beyond the manager and players.
What Did Lisandro Martinez Say?
Martinez did not hide his frustration after United’s defeat in Madrid, delivering a blunt assessment of the club’s current situation. He went berserk after their defeat and hurled some explosive comments about the hierarchy.
“Really poor, really poor. I have to control myself a lot, but, sometimes it’s the reflection of the mirror of how is our club at the moment,” he told Amazon Prime.
The defender then directed his criticism towards the club’s leadership, particularly technical director Jason Wilcox.
“I expect more, 100%. I expect more from our technical director,” Martinez said, while acknowledging that the players also needed to improve.
He also defended manager Michael Carrick, suggesting the coach had not received sufficient backing and warning against repeatedly changing managers without addressing wider structural problems.
“You can’t keep changing, changing, changing the manager. What about other areas?” he added.

Is Martinez Right About Manchester United's Problems?
There is some merit to Martinez's argument. United's recruitment strategy, squad depth and failure to build consistently on previous progress deserve scrutiny. A manager cannot be expected to compete at the highest level without adequate options across every position, particularly during a demanding season involving domestic and European football.
United conceded inside the opening minute against Atletico, with Pablo Barrios finding the net before Ademola Lookman sealed the victory in the second half. The result highlighted the team's defensive vulnerability and inability to recover from setbacks.
Martinez is also correct that responsibility for a club's performance cannot rest entirely on the manager. Recruitment decisions, squad construction and long-term planning are crucial components of success.
However, identifying a problem does not automatically make the person raising it immune to criticism.
Why Martinez Is Part Of The Problem
The biggest weakness in Martinez's argument is the timing and manner of his intervention. The defender's own performances have been inconsistent, and United's defensive shortcomings cannot be separated from the contributions of the players on the pitch.
The goals conceded against Atletico exposed a team struggling to maintain concentration and defensive organisation. United's backline failed to prevent Barrios from scoring almost immediately, while the team could not recover sufficiently to change the outcome. Across the season, they have won just two out of nine games, which is not good enough from the players.
Martinez's criticism would have carried greater authority if it came alongside a sustained run of commanding performances. Instead, the outburst risks appearing like an attempt to shift attention away from the players' shortcomings.
The Outburst Could Make Matters Worse
Martinez's frustration may reflect genuine concerns within the dressing room, but choosing to air them publicly immediately after a defeat was a questionable decision. His remarks have shifted attention away from United's performance and towards a damaging debate about the board, recruitment and internal accountability.
Former United captain Wayne Rooney criticised the defender's approach, saying: "I think he's maybe gone a bit too far, and that should have stayed internal."
Hence, being a senior player, the Argentine could have shown a bit more restraint, a part of Man United ex-players have already raised this concern. A large section of Man United fans have hailed 'Licha' for his honesty, but the immediate focus will be on the aftermath, both on and off the field.
