Cristian Chivu downplayed Jose Mourinho’s recent comparison between Inter’s newly crowned Serie A champions and the 2010 treble-winning side, stressing that discussions should focus on the current Scudetto and the coming Coppa Italia final against Lazio rather than attempts to rank different generations.
Mourinho coached Inter to Serie A, Champions League and Coppa Italia success in 2010, then left San Siro for Real Madrid. Earlier this week, Mourinho stated that none of the current Inter players, who can secure a domestic double on Wednesday, would have started in that historic team.
Chivu, who played under Mourinho during that treble season, explained that football has changed too much to allow fair comparisons. The Romanian felt the real point is that both Inter squads delivered happiness to supporters and created strong emotional connections around San Siro and beyond.
When asked about Mourinho’s comments, Chivu replied directly. “Ask him. I was fortunate enough to play in the other team. I am sure comparisons between two generations cannot be made; many things have changed in 16 years.” The defender underlined generational shifts in tactics, pace and expectations.
Chivu then highlighted what links the different eras rather than divides them. “But this Inter, like the 2010 side, brings joy to its fans, and that is the most important thing. Let’s talk about the Scudetto won this year and the Coppa Italia final, rather than numbers and polls.”
Inter meet Lazio in the midweek Coppa Italia final, with both sides already facing each other on Saturday. The Nerazzurri produced a strong 3-0 victory over the Biancocelesti in that league match, using it as ideal preparation before the decisive knockout tie.
Captain Lautaro Martinez scored once and created another goal in that 3-0 win, yet Chivu refused to single out individuals. “It is the merit of everyone, not just Lautaro,” he added. “He puts in soul, professionalism and seriousness and gives everything he has. But it is also the merit of his team-mates who follow him, especially in doing certain things. It is a fantastic group and team living something special. I am happy for them because they deserve it.”
Chivu’s comments underline the collective approach behind Inter’s season, where the Serie A title is already secured and another trophy is within reach. While debate around Mourinho’s remarks continues, the focus inside Inter appears fixed on team unity, results and making this campaign memorable for supporters.
