India are set to renew their rivalry with two-time FIFA World Cup champions Uruguay after a gap of 44 years, with the two sides meeting in an international friendly at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Tuesday (October 6).

The encounter will be only the second meeting between India and Uruguay in senior men’s international football, with their previous clash coming during the inaugural Nehru Cup in Kolkata in 1982. The Blue Tigers will now hope to draw inspiration from that historic encounter as Khalid Jamil’s side prepares for another formidable opponent following their 4-0 defeat to Brazil.

India vs Uruguay: What happened in 1982?

The 1982 Nehru Cup brought some of Uruguay’s biggest stars to Kolkata, including Enzo Francescoli, Venancio Ramos and Jorge da Silva. Despite the gulf in experience and pedigree, India showed considerable fighting spirit in front of a packed Eden Gardens.

Uruguay made a blistering start, with Jorge da Silva scoring twice in the opening 23 minutes. However, India refused to surrender, and Manas Bhattacharya pulled one back in the 35th minute with a memorable strike that sent the home crowd into a frenzy.
Mario Saralegui eventually restored Uruguay’s two-goal advantage in the 70th minute as the South American giants secured a 3-1 victory.

Despite the defeat, the performance became an important chapter in Indian football history. Manas, who was part of that team, recalled the significance of competing against such a heavyweight.

“Scoring against one of the world’s best teams and playing toe-to-toe with them was a matter of immense pride for us. The current Indian team has also displayed a remarkable fighting spirit against Brazil and Panama. Khalid Jamil’s tactics and the drive to battle for the full 90 minutes demonstrate just how positive the mindset of Indian football has become.”

India went on to hold South Korea to a 2-2 draw and famously beat Yugoslavia B 2-1, with Manas and Manoranjan Bhattacharya scoring. Uruguay remained unbeaten throughout the tournament and lifted the inaugural Nehru Cup after beating China 2-0 in the final.

Forty-four years later, India will attempt to write another memorable chapter against Uruguay on home soil.
