India are set to begin their campaign in the SAFF Championship 2026 with a high-voltage Group B encounter against arch-rivals Pakistan in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on Thursday, November 5. The defending champions will be aiming to start their title defence on a winning note as they look to secure a record-extending 10th SAFF Championship crown.

However, India will not be competing with their full-strength senior squad in the regional tournament. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has opted to send a second-string team, with the senior national side and head coach Khalid Jamil focusing on the upcoming international friendlies against New Zealand.

The responsibility of guiding the Indian contingent will rest with Naushad Moosa, who currently coaches the India U23 team. He will be supported by Bibiano Fernandes as assistant coach, while Patshuram Salwadi will take charge of goalkeeping duties. Saifulla has been appointed strength and conditioning coach.

India vs Pakistan: Match Preview

India enter the competition as defending champions and the most successful team in the tournament’s history, having lifted the trophy nine times. The Blue Tigers will be determined to begin their journey towards a 10th title with a positive result against Pakistan.

Pakistan, meanwhile, will look to challenge their traditional rivals and make a strong start to their campaign. The side, featuring players such as Abdullah Iqbal, has shown encouraging performances under head coach Nolberto Solano.

With India relying on a relatively inexperienced squad comprising younger players, Thursday’s contest could provide Pakistan with an opportunity to challenge the defending champions. Nevertheless, the Indian youngsters will be eager to make their mark on the international stage.

The match is expected to attract considerable attention given the historic rivalry between the two nations, with both teams looking to gain an early advantage in Group B.
