The Indian national football team is set for another major international test, with two-time FIFA World Cup winners Uruguay scheduled to face the Blue Tigers in Kolkata on October 6, 2026.

The friendly will be played at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, popularly known as the Salt Lake Stadium, and will form part of a remarkable international window for Indian football.

Uruguay’s visit will follow India’s clash against Brazil in Kolkata on October 3. Before that, India will take on Panama in Bengaluru on September 26, giving Indian fans the opportunity to watch three World Cup-playing nations in the space of just 10 days.

Uruguay bring World Cup pedigree

Uruguay remain one of the most decorated teams in international football. La Celeste won the inaugural FIFA World Cup in 1930 before lifting the trophy again on home soil in 1950.

Uruguay are currently ranked 20th in the FIFA World Ranking and boast a rich footballing tradition that has produced some of South America’s biggest stars.

There is also an Indian connection in Uruguay’s current coaching setup. Former Uruguay striker Diego Forlán, who is now the national team’s head coach, spent a brief spell in Indian football with Mumbai City FC during the 2016 Indian Super League season.

Brazil await India in Kolkata

The Uruguay fixture comes just three days after India face five-time world champions Brazil in Kolkata on October 3.

Brazil’s visit is expected to be one of the biggest football occasions in the country in recent years. The Seleção are the most successful team in FIFA World Cup history, having won the tournament five times, with their last triumph coming in 2002.

The Brazil game will give India an opportunity to test themselves against one of the deepest talent pools in world football and experience the intensity of facing a side with an unrivalled World Cup record.

Panama clash in Bengaluru

India’s three-match run begins with Panama in Bengaluru on September 26. Panama have established themselves as a competitive force in CONCACAF and have appeared at the FIFA World Cup, making their visit another significant test for the Indian side.

With Panama in Bengaluru followed by Brazil and Uruguay in Kolkata, the September-October window promises an extraordinary stretch of international football for Indian supporters.

For India, the fixtures will provide valuable exposure against teams from different footballing cultures and continents. They will also offer head coach Khalid Jamil and his players an opportunity to assess themselves against opposition with considerably higher international pedigree.
