Police have released new details about a mass shooting at an Idaho In-N-Out on Saturday, a burst of violence that rattled the small city of Twin Falls.

The lone shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks said at a Sunday afternoon news conference.

Three people were killed in the shooting, and seven others were wounded. Authorities have not released the names of the victims, though In-N-Out said one of the dead was an employee at the chain.

Hicks said the investigation remains ongoing and that authorities are still working to piece together “possible motivations.” The FBI, which is assisting the case, has opened a tip portal.

“Even the smallest detail may be important to our investigation,” the police chief said.

How did the violence unfold?

Hicks walked through the timeline of the shooting and its aftermath, which he described as “one of the most chaotic instances of what law enforcement officers encounter in their career.”

At 2:29 p.m. local time Saturday, 911 dispatchers received multiple calls reporting shots fired near the Twin Falls In-N-Out, located on Blue Lakes Boulevard North. “Dispatchers could hear screaming,” Hicks said.

Officers rushed to the scene and “converged” on the restaurant, where unverified social media videos appeared to show the gunman firing a rifle in the parking lot and people running away from the area.

What is known about the gunman?

Investigators have named the gunman as 24-year-old Chad Williams, but did not offer any further information on him.

Police said that Williams died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Hicks also condemned misinformation circulating on social media about the shooter’s identity, saying that, to the best of his knowledge, Williams acted alone.

“At this time, we are still working to determine the full set of circumstances in this incident, including the suspect’s actions and possible motivations. The Williams family has been notified, and they are fully cooperating with law enforcement.

“Their hearts are also broken during this time.”

Who are the victims?

Police did not release the names of the three people killed or the seven wounded on Sunday. Earlier Saturday, a city spokesman told The Independent that three people had died and two had been wounded, while stressing that the toll was likely to rise.

Of the injured, two have been released from the hospital, three are in stable condition and two remain in critical condition.

Hicks acknowledged the toll the shooting has taken on Twin Falls, a community of about 56,000 people, located roughly 130 miles southeast of Boise.

“Together our community will get through this,” he said. “Remain Twin Falls strong, and support each other.”

One witness earlier described seeing a woman in an In-N-Out uniform bleeding from a gunshot wound to the chest. Another worker dragged her across the parking lot, where paramedics later treated her.

“She was pretty bad off, but I don’t know. I hope she made it,” the witness said.

In a separate statement Saturday, Lynsi Snyder, president of In-N-Out, confirmed that one of the restaurant’s associates had died.

“We lost one of our beautiful Associates tonight,” she wrote in a social media post. “She was taking care of our most important asset – our Customers, and her life was taken by a disgusting human who doesn’t value the lives of others or his own.”

Off-duty cop and passerby hailed as heroes

Police say that an off-duty state trooper and passerby engaged the gunman as the violence unfolded and prevented even greater loss of life.

“We believe their actions helped drive the suspect away from the scene, preventing further casualties,” Hall told reporters.

Later in the Sunday briefing, Robert Bohls, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Salt Lake City office, said the bureau is “working tirelessly to support the investigation.”

He urged anyone with information to contact the agency through its tip portal, where the public can submit photos and videos related to the shooting.

Idaho’s governor and representatives in Congress said on Saturday that they were monitoring the situation and keeping the Twin Falls community in their prayers.

So far in 2026, there have been 332 mass shootings in the U.S., according to the Mass Shooter Tracker, which defines mass shootings as instances in which four or more people are shot.
