FC Goa kept their hopes of reaching the AFC Challenge League 2026-27 quarter-finals alive with a 2-1 victory over Bangladesh’s Fortis FC in their second Group C match at the Mohammed Al Hamad Stadium in Hawally, Kuwait, on Tuesday, October 20.
The AIFF Super Cup champions had lost their opening fixture 1-2 against Tajikistan’s FC Regar-TadAZ, making a victory against Fortis important to their campaign.
Jorge Ortiz opened the scoring in the sixth minute before Chiki struck the winner in the 85th minute after Rafayel Tudu had equalised for the Bangladeshi side.
The result leaves FC Goa with three points from two matches. Their final group-stage fixture against Kuwait’s Qadsia SC on Friday, October 23, will determine whether they can progress to the knockout stage.
FC Goa qualification scenario: What do the Gaurs need?
The qualification format makes the final match particularly important. In the West Zone, the three group winners and the best second-placed team across Groups A, B and C will advance to the quarter-finals.
Qadsia SC strengthened their position with a 1-0 victory over Regar-TadAZ on Tuesday, taking their tally to six points. Goa and Regar-TadAZ have three points each, while Fortis remain without a point after two defeats.
Scenario 1: FC Goa beat Qadsia SC
A victory would take Goa to six points and give them a strong chance of qualifying. However, winning the final match would not automatically guarantee a quarter-final berth.
If Regar-TadAZ also win their final fixture against Fortis, three teams could finish on six points. In that situation, the competition’s head-to-head tie-breakers and subsequent criteria would become important in determining the final standings.
Scenario 2: FC Goa draw against Qadsia SC
A draw would take Goa to four points, while Qadsia would finish with seven and secure the group title. Goa would then depend on the results of the other West Zone groups to determine whether they could qualify as the best second-placed team.
Their chances would be more difficult because other group runners-up could finish with a higher points tally.
Scenario 3: FC Goa lose to Qadsia SC
A defeat would leave Goa on three points and eliminate their chances of winning Group C. Their only remaining route would depend on the final standings across the West Zone groups, making qualification considerably more difficult.
Can FC Goa still reach the quarter-finals?
Yes, the Gaurs remain in contention, but they need a positive result against Qadsia and may require favourable results elsewhere. Goa’s immediate priority will be to win their final fixture and improve their standing within Group C. With only four West Zone teams qualifying for the quarter-finals, the match against Qadsia will be decisive for their continental campaign.
