Manchester City are facing a crucial Premier League run-in while rumours grow that Pep Guardiola may depart this summer. Jamie Carragher believes those reports could push the Manchester City squad to deliver another title, and possibly a domestic treble, before any change in the dugout.
Guardiola is contracted to Manchester City until June 2027, yet several reports suggest the current campaign could be the final one. Carragher feels talk of an early exit may sharpen focus in the dressing room rather than unsettle it, especially with Arsenal leading a tight title race.
Manchester City still have a route to another Premier League crown and a domestic clean sweep. Guardiola’s side must win their final two league fixtures and need Arsenal to drop points against Crystal Palace on the last day. That scenario would also keep a potential domestic treble alive.
Carragher argued that the speculation might actually serve as extra fuel for Manchester City’s players. The former defender suggested the squad could see this as a final chance to honour Guardiola with more silverware, especially after so many seasons of success under the current manager.
Carragher also highlighted the practical side of Guardiola’s situation, with planning already under way for a possible change. “I don’t suppose Man City or Pep Guardiola can do anything about the timing, the former Liverpool defender told Sky Sports.” Carragher pointed out that any successor needs clarity.
“They have to let the club know, the next guy coming in, we hear it’s [Enzo] Maresca, he’d have to have information about this. He would have staff who he’d have to speak to. The closer it gets to the end of the season, there’s more people who know. Eventually, it comes out. This wouldn’t have happened overnight you imagine. It would’ve been the last few weeks, maybe couple of months. There’s just too many people involved for it not to come out in the end.”
Pep Guardiola Manchester City records and trophy collection
Since joining Manchester City in 2016, Guardiola has managed 591 matches, winning 416 and collecting 20 trophies. That haul includes the club’s first Champions League title in 2023, plus sustained success in domestic competitions across league, cups and season-opening showpieces.

Guardiola has guided Manchester City to six Premier League titles, three FA Cups, five EFL Cups, three Community Shields, one UEFA Super Cup and one Club World Cup. Guardiola is also the only coach to win four consecutive English top-flight titles, underlining long-term dominance in the league.
Statistically, Guardiola leads the Premier League era for managers with at least five games in charge. Guardiola holds the best points-per-game figure at 2.29 and the highest win percentage at 71.2. The scale of that record frames why any departure would mark a significant moment.

Carragher insisted that the dressing room is unlikely to react badly to the situation. "I don't think it'd affect City in a negative way. It might make no difference, but if it did affect things I think it would be in a positive way. What he's done for these players, what a way to send this man out. Can we go and win a domestic treble for Pep Guardiola, in his last game?"
With Guardiola’s achievements clear and the title race still open, Manchester City enter the final fixtures balancing pressure with opportunity. Whether Guardiola leaves this summer or not, Carragher expects the squad to treat the remaining matches as a chance to extend an already historic era.
