Fulham boosted hopes of European football as Ryan Sessegnon secured a 1-0 win over Aston Villa. The 43rd-minute finish separated the sides at Craven Cottage. Marco Silva’s team climbed into the Premier League’s top half and moved within two points of sixth-placed Brighton.
The defeat leaves Aston Villa looking over their shoulder in the Champions League race. Unai Emery’s side could slip to fifth if Liverpool defeat Crystal Palace later on 25 April 2026. Villa’s away form again stalled, while Fulham finally halted a difficult run against the visitors.
The first half developed slowly, with few chances before the interval. Morgan Rogers produced the opening effort after John McGinn released Rogers down the right flank. Rogers cut inside but dragged the shot narrowly past the far post. Moments later, Ollie Watkins went close with England boss Thomas Tuchel watching from the stands.
Fulham punished those misses just before half-time. Sasa Lukic met a cross with a firm header, forcing a superb save from Emiliano Martinez. The rebound dropped kindly for Sessegnon, who reacted quickly and drove the ball in from close range. The goal gave Fulham a slender but valuable advantage at the break.
Silva’s side believed they had extended the lead on 65 minutes. Lukic delivered a deep corner to the back post, where Timothy Castagne headed past Martinez. Referee Michael Oliver quickly disallowed the goal, ruling that Sander Berge had fouled Martinez in the six-yard box during the set piece.
Aston Villa pushed hard late on, searching for an equaliser. Tammy Abraham almost repeated the decisive impact from the previous win over Sunderland. Abraham beat Joachim Andersen with neat skill inside the area but lifted the shot over the bar from a promising position, seven minutes from full-time.
Match statistics underlined Fulham’s edge in key moments. The hosts recorded 13 attempts and an expected goals figure of 1.06. Villa produced 10 shots with an xG of 0.71 against Bernd Leno. Fulham’s defence restricted clear openings, while Villa struggled to convert pressure into high-quality chances.
| Team | Shots | Expected Goals (xG) |
|---|---|---|
| Fulham | 13 | 1.06 |
| Aston Villa | 10 | 0.71 |
Villa’s ongoing away issues continued. Emery’s team have now taken one win from their last eight Premier League away fixtures, drawing three and losing four. They are also without a victory in five straight league trips, with two draws and three defeats. Emery also suffered a first Premier League loss against Fulham in nine meetings.
For Fulham, the victory broke a sequence of six consecutive defeats against Aston Villa in all competitions. Since the start of 2000, the Cottagers have beaten only Bolton Wanderers and Newcastle United more often at home in league games. Fulham now hold nine home league wins over Villa in that period.
Silva’s players combined disciplined defending with clinical finishing at Craven Cottage. Sessegnon’s goal and a resilient structure without the ball proved enough against a Villa side chasing Champions League qualification. Fulham’s position strengthens the club’s late push for European football, while Villa face pressure to address away form during the final weeks.
