During a Senate hearing on Wednesday, Senator Bernie Moreno tore into Anthony Fauci using explicit language while pressing the former public health official on the government’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Who the f*** do you think you were?” Moreno, an Ohio Republican, asked Fauci. “It is a total disgrace what you did to this country.”
He further accused Fauci — the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases — of being “more interested in being a celebrity than saving the American people.”
Fauci, an immunologist, became a household name while helping lead President Donald Trump’s response to the pandemic. Though he initially won praise from Trump, he later drew fierce criticism from conservatives who opposed pandemic restrictions.
His appearance at today’s Senate committee hearing followed a subpoena from Senator Rand Paul, a Kentucky Republican, who sought answers about the origins of the virus and his handling of lockdown measures.
