Bhubaneswar, October 23: Odisha FC will look to register their first victory of the 2026-27 Indian Super League (ISL) season when they host table-toppers NorthEast United FC at the Kalinga Stadium on Saturday. While Odisha have collected just one point from their opening two matches, the Highlanders have won both their games to establish themselves at the top of the standings.
The fixture also brings back memories of Odisha’s 4-1 victory over NorthEast United in March, when Rahul K.P. scored twice, and Subham Bhattacharya found the net on his debut. However, Odisha head coach TG Purushothaman expects a challenging contest against an opposition that has developed strong combinations over the past few seasons.
“It will be a tough match for us. They are a well-gelled team. They have been playing together for two to three years. Their understanding and combinations are good,” Purushothaman said.
The Odisha coach also emphasised the importance of managing expectations and ensuring that pressure does not affect his players’ performance.
“We have to go without pressure. Pressure won’t give you anything; it will give you all the negative things. We have to overcome the pressure and find a way to perform well in a positive manner,” he added.
NorthEast United head coach Juan Pedro Benali, meanwhile, cautioned his team against underestimating the hosts despite their contrasting starts to the campaign. Recalling last season’s defeat in Guwahati, Benali stressed that past results should not influence the team’s approach to Saturday’s encounter.
“Last season, everybody underestimated Odisha, and they beat us here. We don’t want to make the same mistake,” Benali said.
He further underlined the unpredictable nature of football, adding, “Every game is a new story, new tactics, new everything. If you think the last game means you will win the next one, you’re mistaken.”
Benali also praised forward Parthib Gogoi’s team-first attitude after the youngster featured for only a few minutes in his 100th appearance for the club, highlighting the importance of collective progress over individual milestones.
NorthEast United will be without defender Asheer Akhtar, who is recovering from a broken rib. Benali confirmed that the defender could return to training next week.
For Odisha, new signing Stephen Eze remains focused on helping the team deliver despite the expectations surrounding their home fixture.
“The fans will be here; there are too many expectations. I am just focused on the game. No pressure. I will do what I can do best to help my team,” Eze said.
With Odisha seeking their first win and NorthEast United aiming to maintain their unbeaten start, Saturday’s encounter presents an important early-season test for both sides.
