One viral selfie saw Haaland jokingly call animated character Shrek his “twin,” while after eliminating Brazil with a brace, he posted a cheeky locker-room selfie captioned, “Well, well, well.”

When a viral Instagram video compared his blond hairstyle to a green onion, Haaland joined the joke himself by replying with a side-eye dog GIF. He also encouraged fans to search his name on Google after a special Viking rowing animation was added to his search results. For many supporters, Haaland’s online personality has become just as appealing as his footballing brilliance.

Sarah Wilson, a New York-based baseball content creator who recently started following football, described Haaland as her favourite player after discovering his social media presence.

“I love Erling Haaland more than life itself,” she said in a viral video. “I can’t fathom being such a pretty Norwegian princess and also being one of the best strikers in football.” Wilson believes Haaland perfectly represents Generation Z athletes by combining elite sporting ability with an authentic and humorous personality.

Speaking during Norway’s World Cup campaign, Haaland admitted he has enjoyed the overwhelming support from American fans. “I like the Americans. I think they’re hilarious,” Haaland said. “They’re funny, and honestly, everything about this World Cup has been amazing.”

According to social media experts, Haaland reflects a broader shift in modern sport, where athletes now shape their own public image through social media instead of relying solely on interviews and press conferences.

Arizona State University professor Jeffrey Kassing noted that today’s stars enjoy unprecedented control over how fans perceive them, allowing personalities to shine beyond their performances on the field. This has also fuelled what psychologists describe as parasocial relationships, one-sided emotional connections fans develop with celebrities through constant online interaction.

While most fan interactions remain positive, experts caution that excessive attachment can sometimes lead to unhealthy behaviour.

Sports management student Skyla Clarke said footballers often experience both immense admiration and unfair criticism online, with even players’ families occasionally becoming targets.

Haaland himself recently acknowledged the growing use of AI-generated content involving footballers, describing some of it as “a bit scary,” though he welcomed the memes and traditions surrounding Norway’s World Cup run as signs of the team’s growing popularity.

With goals flowing freely and his internet fame soaring, Haaland has become much more than Norway’s star striker. He has emerged as one of the defining personalities of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, equally capable of breaking defensive lines and breaking the internet.
