Mohun Bagan Super Giant face East Bengal FC in the IFA Shield final on Thursday, with the two Kolkata giants meeting again in a Cup decider just weeks after one of the most one-sided derby finals in recent memory.

The last time the two sides met in a Cup final, East Bengal produced a stunning 4-1 victory over their arch-rivals in the Durand Cup 2026 final, ending a 22-year wait for the prestigious trophy.

East Bengal vs Mohun Bagan: What Happened in Last Kolkata Derby?

The August 23 final at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan was effectively decided in a breathtaking first half. East Bengal came out with extraordinary intensity and took the lead in the 10th minute through Bipin Singh, who calmly finished after being set up by Bashim Rashid.

Just two minutes later, Edmund Lalrindika doubled East Bengal’s advantage. The forward was far from finished, however, as he struck again in the 22nd minute to put the Red and Gold Brigade 3-0 ahead.

Mohun Bagan managed to pull one goal back through Manvir Singh in the 33rd minute, briefly offering the Mariners a route back into the contest. But East Bengal immediately regained control of the final. Lalrindika completed his hat-trick in the 44th minute, sending East Bengal into half-time with a commanding 4-1 advantage.

The second half was a completely different affair. There were no further goals as East Bengal managed the game effectively and protected their huge advantage. Despite Mohun Bagan enjoying more possession and attempting more shots during the match, East Bengal remained the more clinical side and secured one of the biggest wins in the history of the Kolkata Derby.

For East Bengal, the triumph had enormous historical significance. The victory ended their 22-year wait for the Durand Cup, with their previous success coming in 2004. More importantly, the 4-1 win took them to **17 Durand Cup titles**, level with Mohun Bagan’s record.

Now, the rivalry moves to another Cup final. Mohun Bagan will be desperate to respond, while East Bengal enter the IFA Shield decider with the psychological advantage of having already dismantled their rivals in a final this season.

The question is whether Thursday’s final will produce another East Bengal celebration – or a Mohun Bagan response.
