Liverpool are preparing for a major change in attack as Mohamed Salah prepares to leave Anfield, and Jamie Carragher believes RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande could be the right profile to replace that output, with the 19-year-old already delivering at club level and on the World Cup stage.
The Ivory Coast international recorded 22 goal contributions for RB Leipzig in the 2025-26 season, scoring 13 goals and supplying nine assists, and only Michael Olise, with 140, completed more dribbles than Diomande’s 132 among Bundesliga players in all competitions, underlining why Liverpool view Diomande as a primary wide target.
Liverpool’s recruitment team are reshaping the squad under new head coach Andoni Iraola, with Salah and Andy Robertson both leaving as free agents, and Salah’s departure is especially significant because the forward matched the Premier League’s single-season goal involvement record of 47 during the 2024-25 title-winning campaign.
Salah has also become Liverpool’s leading scorer and assister in Premier League history, with 191 league goals and 93 assists, and the club have already moved to add one winger by agreeing a 40m (34.5m) transfer for Victor Munoz from Osasuna, yet further signings in wide positions remain a priority.
Key attacking statistics from Salah and Diomande, plus a Bundesliga comparison, are shown below to highlight what Liverpool may be losing and what Diomande has delivered so far.
| Player | Club / Season | Goals | Assists | Total Goal Involvements | Dribbles Completed (All Competitions) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mohamed Salah | Liverpool 2024-25 (Premier League) | – | – | 47 | – |
| Mohamed Salah | Liverpool (Premier League all time) | 191 | 93 | 284 | – |
| Yan Diomande | RB Leipzig 2025-26 (all competitions) | 13 | 9 | 22 | 132 |
| Michael Olise | Bayern Munich 2025-26 (all competitions) | – | – | – | 140 |
Carragher, speaking during World Cup coverage, explained that personal viewing of RB Leipzig has been limited but the numbers and international displays have convinced Carragher that Liverpool’s reported interest in Diomande is logical at this stage of the rebuild.
“I’m not watching RB Leipzig every week, but he’s had a big impact in Germany, there’s no doubt about that. I see his stats andstuff on social media,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“He was fantastic in the first game at the World Cup, less so in the second game, but he was still a real danger and set up the goal for his side. I think what we’d be buying is potential, not what he is now. He’s a 19-year-old kid, but when you look at him, physically, he looks like he has all the attributes. When you think of all the success Liverpool have had with quick, physical wide players… Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, especially those two. He looks to have those types of traits, and that’s what Liverpool lacked last season, pace in the wide areas. They already have one signing in, in Munoz from Osasuna, and I think you’d want some pace opposite him as well. That looks like where they’re going in the market. Is he worth it? Time will tell. Liverpool spent big last year and at the moment you’d say those players weren’t worth it, but they still have time. It’s not my money, so if Liverpool want him, get him!”
Diomande’s World Cup performances for Ivory Coast have raised the winger’s profile further, with a Man-of-the-Match display in a 1-0 victory over Ecuador in the opening group match and an important contribution in a 2-1 defeat to Germany, where Diomande was heavily involved in Ivory Coast’s goal.
The teenager is also focused on helping Ivory Coast create history by reaching the World Cup knockout rounds for the first time, and a draw against Curacao on Thursday would be enough to secure progression, meaning Diomande’s form on the global stage could stay in the spotlight for longer.
Off the pitch, Diomande is expected to move away from RB Leipzig after the tournament, with reports suggesting a valuation of around 130m (112m), interest from Paris Saint-Germain, and a new head coach at the club in former Argentina centre-back Martin Demichelis, who was appointed on Monday.
Liverpool’s strategy now appears clear, with Iraola seeking more pace and direct running in wide positions after a season where that element was considered missing, and Diomande’s numbers, age and style have placed the winger on a list that already includes the incoming Munoz as Liverpool reshape options either side of the central forwards.
