Churchill Brothers SC Goa and East Bengal FC will renew their long-standing rivalry when they lock horns in the MG Indian Super League (ISL) 2026-27 at Fatorda Stadium on Sunday (October 18).
The encounter promises to be an intriguing contest, with Churchill looking to build on their historic opening-day victory, while defending champions East Bengal aim to begin their league campaign with three points.
Churchill Brothers made an impressive return to the top-flight stage, registering a memorable 2-1 win over Mumbai City FC in their ISL debut. Gaurav Bora gave the Goan outfit the lead before Colombian forward Sebastián Gutiérrez delivered a decisive late strike to seal all three points against the Islanders.
The result provided Churchill with an ideal start to their campaign and underlined their ability to compete against established ISL sides. However, head coach Dimitris Dimitriou is aware that his team must maintain its intensity and improve certain aspects of its performance if they are to challenge the defending champions.
“We got the win and the first three points, but there is certainly plenty of room for improvement,” Dimitriou said. The Churchill coach added that his players had worked hard on analysing their opening performance and expressed confidence that they would produce better football against East Bengal.
Playing at home for the second consecutive match could prove advantageous for Churchill, who will look to use their familiarity with the conditions and the confidence gained from their victory over Mumbai City.
East Bengal Begin Title Defence
For East Bengal, Sunday’s fixture marks the beginning of their ISL title defence following a demanding spell of domestic and continental football. Antonio López Habas’ team arrive in Goa after suffering a narrow 3-2 defeat against Iraqi club Al-Shorta in the AFC Champions League Two, where David Lalhlansanga scored both goals for the Kolkata-based outfit.
Despite the setback, East Bengal will be keen to put their continental disappointment behind them and establish an early foothold in the league. Habas has a number of new additions at his disposal, including goalkeeper Phurba Lachenpa, midfielder Dani Ramírez, Australian attacker Chris Ikonomidis, forward Ake Loba and Polish striker Łukasz Zwoliński.
The new recruits are expected to add depth and quality to a squad that will face the challenge of balancing domestic ambitions with its continental commitments. Their integration into the team could be an important factor as East Bengal look to sustain their performances across competitions.
Habas, however, is not underestimating the challenge posed by Churchill Brothers. The Spanish tactician expects a difficult encounter but has made it clear that his side will travel to Fatorda with victory as the primary objective.
“It is a dangerous match for us, and they are a dangerous team,” Habas said. “Our objective is to get three points. We respect them, but we have to raise our level.”
Familiar Rivals, New ISL Chapter
The match carries additional significance because of the clubs’ shared history in Indian football. Churchill Brothers and East Bengal have faced each other in previous editions of the National Football League and the I-League, building a competitive rivalry over the years.
Their last meeting, in February 2020, ended in a 1-1 draw. Sunday’s encounter will be their first meeting in ISL history, adding a fresh dimension to a familiar contest.
