Margao, Oct 11: Newly promoted side Churchill Brothers FC Goa will begin their Indian Super League campaign against Mumbai City at the Fatorda Stadium on Sunday, October 11. It will be the first time that the Red Machines will be facing the music at the country’s top football league. The fixture brings together a club with a rich history in Indian football and a Mumbai City side looking to make a strong start under new head coach Manolo Márquez.
The ISL debutants enter the league with two I-League titles to their name. The Goan club took over Jamshedpur FC’s sporting licence in August, along with the contracts of 12 players and two coaches, ensuring continuity for a squad already accustomed to the demands of the competition.
The former Jamshedpur contingent had earlier played out a 1-1 draw against Mumbai City in April, with Brandon Fernandes putting the Islanders ahead before Sarthak Goloui restored parity.
Speaking before the fixture, Márquez admitted that his side had limited information about Churchill Brothers, particularly regarding their foreign players. However, he expects the opponents to be eager to make a strong start. “We don’t know if some foreigners will be there or not. But, obviously, it’s the first game. I think that the motivation for Churchill Brothers will be very big,” Márquez said.
Marquez Era For The Islanders
For Mumbai City, the fixture signals the beginning of a new era under Márquez, who has previously led Hyderabad FC to an ISL title and enjoyed a successful stint with FC Goa. He inherits a side that demonstrated defensive resilience last season, conceding just nine goals in 13 league matches.
The Islanders have also added fresh talent to their ranks, with Colombian striker Wilmar Jordán Gil and Spanish midfielder Sergio Llamas among their new signings. Bringing the newcomers into the fold while maintaining the team’s defensive solidity and establishing his tactical approach will be among Márquez’s early priorities.
Churchill Brothers, meanwhile, will be keen to make a strong impression in their opening fixture at Fatorda Stadium, where they will play during the initial phase of the season. The Red Machines will rely on experienced defender Gaurav Bora’s familiarity with the ISL as they prepare to face Mumbai City under Cypriot coach Dimitris Dimitriou. Beyond securing a positive result, Dimitriou has a broader ambition for football in the state. “We aim to bring football back to Goa, bring a smile from football back in Goa,” he said.
With Churchill Brothers preparing for a landmark debut and Mumbai City adjusting to a new coaching regime, both sides will be eager to establish control early. How quickly they adapt to the occasion and impose their respective styles could shape the outcome of the contest.
