Lyon have confirmed the arrival of Caroline Weir on a free transfer after the forward left Real Madrid, with the Scotland international signing a three-year contract. The move reunites Weir with Champions League contention, as Lyon seek to return to the top of Europe after recent setbacks.
Speaking to the club’s media channels, Weir explained why the offer appealed so strongly. “I was super excited to hear that Lyon were interested,” she told the club website. “For me, it’s the club with the most history in the women’s game. To be part of this project, the ambition of the club was in line with what I want to achieve, so I guess it was a no-brainer in many ways to commit to this club.”
Weir leaves Real Madrid as the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, after four seasons in Spain. The forward joined Madrid from Manchester City in 2022 and went on to score 63 goals in 125 appearances. That output made Weir one of the central figures in Madrid’s rise in European competition.
Lyon, record eight-time Champions League winners, have not lifted that trophy since 2022 and lost 4-0 to Barcelona in the 2025-26 final. Despite that, Lyon have dominated domestically, winning the last five Premiere Ligue titles, and view Weir as a key addition to maintain that control.
The forward has spoken openly about regretting the lack of trophies secured during the Madrid spell, despite personal scoring records. That disappointment has shaped Weir’s decision to join a club used to competing for major honours every season, aligning individual ambitions with an established winning environment.
Weir’s profile has also grown on the international stage. Last year, the attacker became the first Scottish player ever nominated for the Ballon d’Or. Lyon’s recruitment of a player with that status underlines the club’s continued intent to stay among Europe’s leading women’s teams and challenge again for continental success.
