Wrexham’s push for a Championship play-off place took a major setback with a 2-0 defeat at Birmingham City, leaving Phil Parkinson’s team four points behind sixth-placed Hull City and missing a chance to close the gap at St. Andrew’s.

The result deepened Wrexham’s poor record at St. Andrew’s, where all four of Wrexham’s league losses to Birmingham have now arrived, with 12 goals conceded in those away fixtures, while Birmingham stretched an unbeaten sequence of seven league meetings against Wrexham.

Birmingham entered the game in mixed form, with one win from six league fixtures, yet Wrexham struggled from the opening minutes, producing only 0.08 expected goals and failing to register a single effort on target across the entire match.

Chris Davies’ side created pressure through sustained attacking play, generating 1.55 expected goals and dominating the shot numbers, with Carlos Vicente and Kai Wagner central to Birmingham’s threat as Wrexham found it difficult to escape sustained pressure in midfield and wide areas.

Key statistical details from Birmingham vs Wrexham are shown below.

Arthur Okonkwo kept Wrexham level before half-time with two important interventions, first reacting well to stop Ibrahim Osman, then racing from goal to thwart Carlos Vicente, but those saves only delayed Birmingham’s breakthrough early in the second half.

The opening goal arrived on 48 minutes, when Wagner delivered from the left and Vicente met the cross with a firm header that squeezed past Okonkwo’s hand, rewarding Birmingham’s pressure soon after the interval and leaving Wrexham chasing the game.

Parkinson later introduced Josh Windass in search of attacking spark, yet Birmingham stayed on top and doubled the lead with 19 minutes left, Christoph Klarer finishing from close range after Seung-ho Paik’s corner from the left caused problems inside the six-yard box.

Vicente’s influence stood out, with five attempts and four on target, both match highs, while Wagner supplied five chances, exceeding the entire Wrexham team’s combined creativity, underlining why Davies could argue Birmingham fully merited a win that harms Wrexham’s play-off ambitions.
