Sept. 1 (UPI) — Russia launched a drone and ballistic missile attack on Kyiv and the surrounding oblast overnight, killing at least 12 people, officials said.

Ukraine’s minister of foreign affairs, Andrii Sybiha, said at least eight people were killed in Kyiv as he accused Russia of targeting residential areas and railway infrastructure.

“This and other recent attacks demonstrate that [Russian President Vladimir] Putin does not show any signs of realism or a genuine willingness to end a war that he cannot and will never win,” the minister said in a statement.

“Instead, he continues to escalate terror.”

Among those killed in Kyiv were six Ukrainian Railways employees, Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, Ukrainian Railways board chairman, said online.

He said a ballistic missile strike targeted a train depot and other railway facilities. At least one person, whom Pertsovskyi identified as a “colleague,” was hospitalized with injuries sustained in the blast.

“Dozens managed to escape to shelters,” he said in a statement.

Nearly 350 first responders were activated following the strikes, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky, who described the overnight Russian barrage as consisting of “a significant number of jet-powered drones and ballistic missiles” that damaged residential buildings and civilian infrastructure.

He said four people were killed and 13 injured in Boryspil, located in Kyiv Oblast. A building was struck, requiring 50 people to be evacuated, he added.

Guided aerial bombs and drone strikes against Odesa have left thousands without electricity, he said, while adding a border crossing with Romania “was deliberately damaged” along with what he called “export infrastructure.”

“Russia always plans its strikes specifically to cause as much destruction to people’s lives as possible, and it succeeds only when air defense capabilities are insufficient,” the president said in an online statement.

He said that among the 12 people killed throughout the nation, one was an Indian citizen.

The overnight attack saw Russia launch 218 Iran-made Shahed drones and several types of missiles at targets throughout Ukraine, with 199 of the projectiles downed by Ukrainian forces, the Ukrainian Air Force Command said online.
