A Georgia man is accused of robbing NASCAR legend Greg Biffle’s North Carolina home after learning the driver and his family had been killed in a plane crash.
Terrell Williams, 44, of Stone Mountain, was charged Tuesday with a dozen felonies following an eight-month investigation into the burglary of Biffle’s home, Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell announced. The charges include second-degree burglary, safecracking and money laundering.
Biffle, 55, his wife, Cristina, 35, and their two children, Emma, 14, and Ryder, 5, were among seven people killed when their private plane crashed near Statesville Regional Airport, North Carolina December 18. On January 8, Biffle’s home was robbed and $30,000 in cash, two Glock handguns, NASCAR memorabilia and gold and silver coins taken, according to police.
A breakthrough came July 29 when Williams was arrested in Cobb County, Georgia, in connection with a burglary that happened after a “highly publicized” homicide. Investigators found property from Biffle’s home among the items recovered during that investigation, the sheriff said.
Investigators plan to bring Williams back to Iredell County, though that likely will not happen until his Georgia case is resolved, Campbell said. Much of the property stolen from Biffle’s home has been recovered.
Williams allegedly targeted homes by using news headlines and social media posts to figure out when people were away, according to Campbell. Williams is also accused of using a radio-frequency detector to navigate the Biffle home during the burglary.
The sheriff said Williams appeared to operate under the radar, using multiple aliases. One alias was allegedly used to buy a vehicle with cash nearly matching the amount stolen from Biffle’s home, he said.
Investigators believe Williams may have been involved in other burglaries, including a 2019 breaking-and-entering case in Mecklenburg County. Campbell said, however, that the charges in Iredell County relate only to the burglary at Biffle’s home.
There is no known connection between Williams and Biffle or his family, the sheriff added.
Williams is being held without bond in Cobb County on local charges stemming from the separate alleged burglary. He also faces multiple felony charges in North Carolina, including safecracking, money laundering, obtaining property by false pretenses, possession of burglary tools, larceny of firearms and breaking and entering.
While Williams has been arrested in the Biffle case, Campbell said the investigation is “far from over.”
Biffle was a 19-time NASCAR Cup Series winner and two-time national series champion. Known as “The Biff” he was also named one of NASCAR’s 75 Greatest Drivers in 2023. The investigation into the cause of the fatal plane crash is ongoing.
