Aug. 18 (UPI) — A Japanese macaque monkey that escaped from a Scottish zoo returned to the facility on his own and is now safely back in his habitat.
The Highland Wildlife Park, located near Kingussie, said the monkey, named Luka, returned home Monday after escaping from the zoo the previous night.
Luka had earlier been spotted on the loose in the Balavil area of Newtonmore.
“The search has concluded successfully and Luka is safely back in our care. He will now be looked over by our keepers and veterinary team before being carefully reintroduced to his group,” Darren McGarry, head of animal care at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, said in a news release.
“We want to thank everyone who has helped during the search particularly those who supported our teams. Luka arrived home on his own accord and we are delighted to have him safely back at the park,” McGarry said.
Another Japanese macaque, named Honshu, escaped from the zoo in January 2024 and was spotted several times in residential neighborhoods before being safely recaptured a few days later. Zookeepers suspected Honshu had been ousted from the zoo’s troop, and he was transferred to the Edinburgh Zoo.
