July 14 (UPI) — E. Jean Carroll announced Tuesday that she’s received the $5 million a civil jury awarded her in 2023 after finding President Donald Trump liable for sexually abusing and defaming the writer.
In addition to the $5 million judgment, she received $625,005 in interest, CNBC reported.
“The eagle has landed,” she titled a Substack post about receiving the funds. In the post she also thanked the lawyers who represented her over the years as well as Trump’s former personal lawyer.
“And … a special, special thanks to Alina Habba Esq.! I could not have done it without you,” Carroll wrote.
Last week, U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan for the Southern District of New York ordered Trump to pay the damages and interest to Carroll after the U.S. Supreme Court refused the president’s request to overturn the civil court’s ruling in the writer’s favor.
A jury awarded the damages in 2023 after finding him liable for sexually abusing Carroll in a Manhattan department store dressing room in the 1990s and for defaming her by denying the allegations in 2019.
An appeals court also upheld the verdict in 2024. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said Trump’s lawyers failed to show any errors in the ruling that would lead to a new trial.
Trump has denied Carroll’s allegations since she first made them and called the $5 million judgment excessive.
Carroll’s lead attorney, Roberta Kaplan, welcomed Tuesday’s news in a statement to CBS News.
“Three years ago, a unanimous nine-person jury found President Trump liable for sexually assaulting and defaming E. Jean Carroll,” Roberta Kaplan said.
“Today, we are pleased to report that she has received the damages payment the jury awarded her as a result of the verdict.”
