Ivory Coast are preparing for a World Cup round-of-32 clash with Norway, yet Gervinho believes the main danger is Ivory Coast, not Erling Haaland. The former Arsenal forward feels self-control and composure will decide whether Ivory Coast progress, even though Haaland has already scored four goals in two matches at the tournament.
Ivory Coast reach the World Cup knockout phase for the first time after finishing second in their group behind Germany. The achievement now brings a direct test against Norway and Haaland, widely viewed as one of world football’s leading finishers, but Gervinho argues Norway should carry most of the pressure.
Gervinho told Stats Perform: “I think the level of the competition is going up. It’s a knockout game. The advantage we have is that we’re not going into it as favourites, so that should allow my younger brothers to play more relaxednot relaxed exactly, but with less pressure. What I would say is that they should enjoy themselves, because at this level, they’ve already done a good job. Going through would be a bonus, of course, and we hope they go very far in this competition. But they need to enjoy it and not put too much pressure on themselves. I think the pressure will be on Norway.” Gervinho highlights how the underdog position might free Ivory Coast’s younger players from heavy expectation.
Asked about whether Ivory Coast should design a special strategy focused on Haaland, Gervinho replied: “I would say no, I don’t think so. They just need to be alert with him because he’s very skilful, he moves well, and he’s clinical. But aside from Haaland, I think there are quite a few quality players who are underestimated but very dangerous. But Ivory Coast’sreal opponent will be Ivory Coast themselves.” Gervinho underlines that discipline and concentration will matter more than an individual marking plan.
Haaland did not play in Norway’s 4-1 loss against France, staying on the bench throughout. That rest leaves Haaland chasing history, as the Norway striker can still become the first player since Hungary’s Sandor Kocsis in 1954 to score at least two goals in each of a first three World Cup games.
While attention centres on Haaland’s scoring run, Yan Diomande has emerged as a major threat for Ivory Coast at this World Cup. Diomande, a winger who reportedly wants to join Paris Saint-Germain, became only the second African player on record, since 1966, to produce 10 or more successful dribbles and create 10 or more chances across a single World Cup group stage.

Diomande’s numbers also stand out at global level. The Ivory Coast winger is the first player from any nation to combine at least 10 completed dribbles and 10 chances created in a group phase alone since Brazil’s Neymar did so in 2018. These statistics suggest Norway’s defence must focus on defending space out wide, not just tracking Haaland’s impact at the other end.
Data from Opta underlines Haaland’s efficiency, with every one of his 10 shots at this World Cup struck first time. That statistic, highlighted in the post above, confirms how little space and time defenders can allow, since even one loose ball near the penalty area might prove costly.
Gervinho also points to Ivory Coast’s forward depth when discussing Ivory Coast vs Norway. “I think we also have good players up front. We have talent too. We have Ange-Yoan Bonny, Yan Diomande, Amad Diallo, Nicolas Pepe. There are a lot of players who can also trouble the Norwegian defence. So if we’re efficient, if we create chances, if we play our football, I also think it’s not only Haaland who should worry us;Norway will also be worried about ourlevel.” Gervinho expects Ivory Coast’s attack to test Norway’s back line.
Looking at Diomande’s journey, Gervinho said: “Looking at where he started and the different clubs he has been through, you can see that hes progressing, and that’s a good thing,” before adding: “Right now, I would say he’sthe one who can bring something extra, who can lead Ivory Coast’sattack. I’m not surprised that we’ve had a young player emerge to lead that attack, because we’ve always had players. I know we will always have players. We’re happy to have Yan with us. We hope he takes charge of this attack like a leader and helps this team progress. But it’snot only Yan. He’s a young player who is still growing, but he can rely on the experience of Nicolas Pepeand the others.” Gervinho sees a balance between youthful drive and experience in the front line.
As Ivory Coast vs Norway approaches, Ivory Coast carry first-time knockout momentum and a growing belief in the squad’s attacking options. Norway bring Haaland’s scoring power and strong supporting players, yet Gervinho insists the outcome will depend on Ivory Coast’s mindset, game management and ability to enjoy the occasion while managing pressure.
